After three losses in the Greene King IPA Championship Bedford Blues are looking to kick start their season at the Memorial Stadium on Sunday afternoon when they face high-flying Bristol.

Having put in a much improved performance against Leeds Carnegie last weekend at Goldington Road, the Blues will be hoping to go one step further at the ‘Mem’.

Prop Nico Steenkamp misses out this weekend with a rib injury.

Although the Blues welcome back Darren Fearn, Director of Rugby Mike Rayer has drafted in former Gloucester and Jersey loosehead Richard Barrington on an emergency loan from Saracens.

The Bedford Blues Academy is looking for players who have the ability to become the Blues 1st XV players of the future.

Do you want to be part of the Blues Academy Development squad, training with the Blues 1st XV squad, and playing your rugby at a partner club in the National leagues, to help you break into the Blues Championship squad ?

Last remaining places for Mike Rayer’s Testimonial dinner on Friday 11th October. Testimonial Committee member Ben Whetstone said:  “We couldn’t have arranged for a more spectacular speaker on the night in the form of Wales, Barbarians and British Lions Legend Phil Bennett.

Throw in the appearance of a Male Voice Choir, a Charity Raffle for Mike’s chosen charity Keech Hospice Care, and an Auction of some unique items, this is an event in Bedford not to be missed.”

The Blues Academy face a tough home game on Wednesday against an older Cambridge U21 XV.  The game is at Goldington Road, kick off 7.30 pm.  Admission is free, the bar is open, and all are welcome.

Cambridge, who were relegated from National One to National Two (South) at the end of last season, have recruited well over the summer and started their National Two South campaign with a good win away at Redruth on Saturday.

Bedford Blues have announced that Blues Academy player Chris Lord has been signed for the Blues senior squad for the 2013/14 season after training with the Blues 1st XV during the summer.  Lord impressed in the Blues training game against Bournemouth scoring three tries, and appeared against Northampton Saints and Saracens in the Blues pre-season friendlies.

19 year old Lord, a winger/full back, joined the Blues Academy a year ago.  A pupil at St.Joseph’s School Ipswich before joining the Blues he played wing for the England U18s Clubs & Schools XV.

Bedford Blues are delighted to announce that after ten years of loyal service as a player and Director of Rugby, the 2013/14 Greene King IPA Championship will be a Testimonial Season for Mike Rayer.

Bedford Blues returned to training at the weekend and it was the first time that new fitness and conditioning coach Paddy Hogben has had the chance to cast his eye over the squad. Hogben, who worked in a similar position at Bath Rugby Club between 2004 and 2008, picks up the fitness reigns from Jamie Bain who left Goldington Road at the end of the season to take up a new role at Gloucester rugby Club. Speaking after training on Saturday morning, Hogben said:
Overall I’m really impressed with the level of fitness that the players have and they all seem in really good shape after the summer break.

Bedford Blues, Bedford Athletic and Junior Blues have been working for some time to produce a plan which will see all three organisations working closer together for the good of rugby in the town.
