After a tough pre-season training programme over the last seven weeks the Blues Academy take to the field for the first time this season on Saturday at Goldington Road (Kick Off 2.00 pm), when they welcome the Leinster Under 18 squad.  Leinster, who last played the Blues Academy in 2009, when they beat the Blues 18 – 7, are warming up for the Irish Inter-Provincial Championship.  Both Bedford and Leinster field a large squad to give both sets of coaches a chance to see new players in action.

Blues Club Doctor, Dr. David Niblett, and Academy physio, Kelly Loftus, put the Blues Academy Coaches through a Medical Training refresher course at Goldington Road, before Academy training this week.

The session covered training on use of the spinal board, which is used to immobilise a player with any suspected neck or spine injury.  This is vital to protect the player from any damage caused by movement until a full assessment can be carried out.

Congratulations to 18 year old Blues Academy centre, Nico Defeo, who has been selected for the Italy U20 squad for their four match tour of Ireland in August.  Italy will play the four Irish provinces, Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster, as part of their preparation for this year's Six Nations tournament.

Nico, who captained the Bedford Modern School 1st XV last year, and has just completed his "A" levels at BMS, impressed the Italian selectors, during a week long training camp in Pisa, Italy last week.
