Northampton Saints Academy vs Bedford Blues Academy
The Blues Academy lost to a strong Northampton Saints Academy by 48pts – 7 at Franklin’s Gardens. The Blues conceded eight tries to the RFU funded Premiership Academy and could not match the power and pace of the Saints backline where centres Howard Packman and Harry Malinder, backed by a pacy back three, stretched the Blues defence.
Saints took the lead after 15 minutes when they worked space on the blind side and centre Howard Packman scored. Further tries followed with second row Harrison Marshall claiming two, and centre Harry Mallinder one, to put Saints ahead by 24pts – 0. The Blues hit back with a good try from centre Freddie Henley-Hunter, converted by fly half Dan Lewis, to make the half time score 24pts -7.
Saints continued the scoring after half time with 2nd half scores from winger George Wacokecoke, followed three minutes later by George Stokes. Scrum-half Cameron Lee-Everton and Harry Betts scored the final tries for a convincing win by 48pts – 7.
Blues’ Academy Director Denis Ormesher said ... “Saints played some good rugby and their counter attack was very effective. We played some good phases but too often we lost the ball in contact on the 4th or 5th phase and Saints counter attacked with real effect. The quality of Saints play showed the standard we need to aim for as the season progresses. Next week’s game against Leicester Tigers Academy will be another tough test. Saints and Tigers on consecutive weekends is about as tough as it gets – exactly the challenge our guys need”.
