Bedford Blues were delighted to unveil the new Club mascot last Saturday as a remake of the former Bedford Bear, redesigned and manufactured to be the community face of the Blues and help reconnect with the next generation of supporters.

Launched at Blues match against Moseley with his extended family of Bedford Bear bothers, the new mascots proved a successful addition and will be at all home games and across the town this season.

Supported by Bedford School Sports Partnership, the new mascot was designed by competition winner Ayo Ajayi, from Newnham Middle School, who we welcomed and hosted in hospitality last Saturday.

Back in April, the Blues laid down the challenge of designing a new mascot for the Club. The only criteria for the mascot was that it had to have a named link to the Club, it must have Bedford’s home kit colours in the design and it must be appealing for younger Blues fans.

Following an overwhelming amount of entries, Ayo’s effort captured both a point to the past and future in a mascot that cannot help but be welcomed in schools, clubs and match day alike. Whilst not the most radical of the designs or ideas, the winning entry is befitting of the morals and ideology of both rugby and Bedford Blues.

Speaking about the competition, Blues Operations Manager, Gareth Alred said: “We are delighted to announce the design of the new mascot and our competition winner. We enjoyed welcoming Ayo and her family to Goldington Road last weekend to enjoy the game and meet the new mascot in full character.

“I’d like to thank everyone who entered the competition and Kelly Rolfe of Bedford School Sports Partnership for the sponsorship and support of the mascot. The standards were extremely high and the judges had a really tough time deciding on the winner, including Bruno Blue, an artistically designed rhino, but everyone is pleased with the remake of the Bedford Bear and look forward to seeing him on duty at all home matches and across the town.”
