MORRIS HEADS TO NEW ZEALAND
Bedford Blues fullback Aaron Morris is determined to be a success at the IRB Junior World Championships in New Zealand next month writes Ted Kemplen of the Bedford Times & Citizen.
Morris, a product of Bedford since the age of five, was named in the squad for the tournament by former Blues scrum half and backs coach Nick Walshe, which sees England kick off thier title defence against Italy on June 2 before facing Australia on June 6 and Argentina on June 10.
On his international future, he said: "Of course we all aspire to play at the highest leel we can.
"I'm just concentrating on doing the best I can for Bedford and with eyes to play well in the Junior World Championship.
"Eventually I do want to play at the highest level possible for England."
Morris made a dream first start for England U20s last month as they ran out 52-5 winners against Italy, bagging himself a try and a conversion at Stadio Peroni.
Although France took the Six Nations title, Morris said: "It was massively pleasing to get on the scoresheet on my first start and have a bit of a positive impact on the game.
"In the second half we knew we had to knuckle down and we definitely came out and showed that.
"I managed to get on the back of a good move, I was happy with the team performance and individually quite relieved."
On the England squad, Nick Walshe said: " We're pleased with the balance and experience and are confident that they will perform well.
“While England U20 are the holders of the trophy, this group hasn’t won anything – we enjoyed a successful Six Nations, and while it was disappointing not to win it, as a group we came on hugely. The key is to keep building on that momentum.”
Forwards Coach Peel added: “Our focus is on that first game against Italy. We have a warm up match and a camp in Newcastle prior to flying out, but the plan is to build towards that opening match. The games come thick and fast in this tournament, we’ve got a very tough group but we’re excited by that challenge.”
