Bedford Blues are pleased to announce their first two new signings for the 2017/18 Greene King IPA Championship season.

The first is prop Sean McCarthy, 26, who joins the Blues from Jersey Reds where he was on his second spell with the club having joined Leinster for the 2014-15 season. McCarthy has represented Ireland at Under 18 level and previously played for Worcester Warriors before heading to Jersey for his first stint at the club in 2012.

The second new signing is back rower Jarad Williams, 27, who heads south from Doncaster Knights. Williams joined the Castle Park outfit from fellow Championship side Yorkshire Carnegie in the summer of 2016 folowing three years at Headingley. The Welshman combined his time with Carnegie with studying for an MSc in Sports Coaching at Leeds Beckett University and playing for their rugby union side.

Speaking about the captures, Blues Director of Rugby Mike Rayer said: "Sean and Jarad are two very talented players who have a wealth of Championship experience between them and we are very excited about welcoming them to Goldington Road next season.

"Sean has been a massive part of a strong Jersey pack for several seasons now and as well as doing his set piece work, he also prides himself on his work rate around the field. As for Jarad, he has been a real handful against us with his strong ball carrying attributes. He is a big physical athlete and will be key in getting us over the gain line. We are looking for both players to add plenty of value to the pack next season."

The new signings come hot off the news that Ben Adams, Jordan Burns, Will Carrick-Smith and Ollie Dodge have joined Ben Cooper and skipper Michael Le Bourgeois in re-signing for Bedford Blues for next season.

The Blues head into action against near neighbours and Premiership giants Northampton Saints under the Friday Night Lights on 17th March. You can still buy discounted tickets for the match, which was arranged following the expulsion of London Welsh from the Championship, by visiting
