MATCH REPORT V JERSEY
Following the highs of last season, the current campaign has finished with the Blues tasting home defeat to Jersey who secured their own Championship status thanks to a bonus point 31-41 victory in front of 2659 fans.
It was certainly a back and forth encounter with the visitors streaking into a 3-15 lead thanks to a penalty and tries from James Voss (converted) and Nick Griffiths before a quick fire double from Harry Wells and Ollie Dodge gave Bedford the lead after James Pritchard added the extras to both. Aaron Penberthy – who kicked 21 points in total – added a penalty and then converted Drew Locke’s try to make it 17-25 at the break.
Penberthy struck an early penalty after the interval before Brendan Burke – playing his final Blues game – latched onto a Jake Sharp pass to score with Pritchard converting. Penberthy replied with a penalty before Jersey-born Mike Le Bourgeois crashed over with Pritchard converting both to make it 31-31.
As Ealing Trailfinders had picked up two points in their defeat to Rotherham, Jersey knew they had to win and they had to get a bonus point to stay up. Their mission was completed in the 68th minute when referee Andrew Small ran under the uprights following a Blues infringement at a driving maul. Penberthy converted and then put the game out of touch with a 74th minute penalty to seal the win.
It was a disappointing finale to the Blues season and certainly wasn’t the way that the team had hoped to see off the departing Sacha Harding and Brendan Burke but all eyes now focus on the 2014/15 Greene King IPA Championship campaign.
Come on you Blues!
