MATCH PREVIEW V BLACKHEATH

Bedford Blues have named their squad to take on Blackheath in their final pre-season friendly ahead of the 2017/18 Championship campaign.

Following a bruising encounter against European Champions Saracens last weekend, Bedford make wholesale changes to the starting line-up as they look to finish their preparations for the new season with a flurry.

With a few niggling injuries, Bedford welcome Tongan number eight Sione Vailanu into the squad for this weekend's game. The big back rower represented Tonga at Under 20s, but has recently been pulling on a Japanese jersey as part of their sevens set up.

Looking ahead to the game, Blues Backs Coach Paul Larkin said: "The lads put in an unbelievable shift against Saracens last weekend and it is only right that we rotate things around a bit so that everyone has the chance to impress before we look at selecting out team to face Richmond in the Championship opener.

"Knowing Blackheath coach James Shanahan as we do, we'll be expecting a well drilled team who are looking to really mix things up and have a good crack at us, and that's exactly what we need. No game of rugby is easy and we'll be looking for the lads to put in a big performance."
