Ealing U20 v Bedford Blues Academy U19

Saturday, 5 March, 2016 - 13:00
Academy Academy
Lost 22 - 12

After a strong start the Blues Academy went in at half time 12 pts all, before allowing Ealing in to the game in a mistake ridden 2nd half, to see Ealing win by 22pts – 12.

Bedford started well showing strong running and good support play.  With the Blues pack on top they were first to score when, from a tap penalty, hooker Charlie Robinson drove over from close range.  Ealing responded straight from the kick off.  They won a lineout on the Blues 22, and the Ealing scrum half made 20 metres before he was stopped.  Ealing won two quick rucks and scored in the corner.  Ealing followed up with a second score, stretching the Blues defence to score wide out.  The try was converted and Ealing were 12pts – 5 up.  Bedford fought back and following good approach by the Blues pack, flanker Tim Herbert drove over to score.  Centre Liam Shields converted.  The half was cut short due to an injury to full back Jack Gibbs, which required him to be taken to hospital.  Thankfully he was released home late on Saturday with no permanent damage.

The second half was full of mistakes and frustrations for the Blues, with a lack of discipline costing them dearly.  Bedford kicked away too much good possession which stopped them developing enough good phases of play.  Ealing looked the more direct side, and took their chances well to score two further tries to win the game by 22pts - 12.

Blues Head Coach, Neil Harris said ….. “This was a frustrating game for us.  We set a target of starting the game strongly which we did.  However our poor discipline is costing us too often, leading to too many penalties, and stopping us establishing any rhythm.  Ealing had a number of U20 players and the game was certainly a good contest for our younger players.”
