CHAMPIONSHIP CUP - THE CHAIRMAN'S VIEW

With the Championship Cup starting for Bedford Blues on Sunday 11th November down at Cornish Pirates, I would just like to take this opportunity to reassure our supporters that we, as a club, are taking this competition extremely seriously.

I know that there was a fair amount of scepticism about this competition when it launched and people wondering why a cup including Premiership teams or those from National One could not be included, but this is what we have and Mike and the players will be doing all they can to bring silverware back to Goldington Road.

Some people did not consider the British & Irish Cup as a great competition, but it is one that we always excelled in reaching the final in 2011 and the semi-final in 2013 and last season. We had some amazing matches against teams from Wales, Ireland and Scotland over the years, and it is well documented that I believe it was an error to withdraw from the B&I Cup. I considered it a strong competition for us on the field as well as being commercially successful over the years.

However, a change was made and we are where we are with the new Championship Cup which the Blues will be embarking on throughout November and December. We are in a tough pool with London Irish, Cornish Pirates and Hartpury, but we had the odds stacked against us last year and still made it to the final four. We'll be hoping to go at least one better this time around!

It has long been the Bedford Blues mantra to play attractive rugby and win games and I am in no doubt that this will continue with the new cup competition. And let's not forget that rugby eyes will be on us as the Championship Cup is also the trialing ground for some new tackle laws which everyone hopes will be successful in the interests of player welfare. We have already suffered our fair share of concussions this season so anything that can help reduce injuries will certainly be welcomed by us.

So enjoy the competition, get behind Mike and all of the players, and let’s see if the 16th man can help us to win some silverware at the end of the season.
