With four games left in the Greene King IPA Championship season, Bedford Blues are delighted to confirm one new signing along with two re-signings for the 2016/17 campaign.

Lock Will Carrick-Smith is heading to Goldington Road having signed on from fellow Championship side London Scottish. The second row star who stands at an impressive six feet 11 inches and tips the scales at 129kg (that’s 20 stone 4lb) has had one season at the Exiles having previously gained Premiership experience with Exeter Chiefs.

Speaking about the addition to the squad, Blues Director of Rugby Mike Rayer said: “Will is a big, strong lad who is going to add plenty of power in the engine room next season and our forwards coach Martin Hynes is very pleased to have him on board. Will comes with a glowing reference from the Chiefs and we have seen just what he is capable of in this league during his tenure with London Scottish.”

The Blues are also pleased to announce that scrum half Jordan Burns and back rower Josh Buggea have both signed new deals for the coming campaign.

Burns, who signed from Harlequins last summer, has been in superb form and added plenty of pace to the already speedy back line. The 22 year old, who started life as a winger and once racked up an impressive time of 10.8 seconds in the 100 metres, has crossed the whitewash seven times this season while also contributing to many more.

Having signed from Worcester Warriors in the Summer of 2014, 22 year old Buggea has come on leaps-and-bounds this season to become an almost ever-present in the squad having only missed out on three games so far. Comfortable on either side of the scrum, the powerful youngster is a hard-hitter who puts his body on the line time and time again.

Speaking about the re-signings, Rayer added: “I’m delighted that Jordan and Josh have both put pen to paper on new deals. Their contribution to the squad has been clear for all to see and I’m hoping that they can continue to develop as players in the coming campaign.

"We’ve had a very busy few weeks, but we are in the process of talking to a number of players in the squad while also looking at areas that we want to strengthen next season. But we’ve also got four huge games to go in the Championship and finishing as high as possible is our primary focus.”
