BOOJ NAMED CHAMPIONSHIP PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Bedford Blues captain Michael Le Bourgeois has been named the Greene King IPA Championship Player of the Year at the 20th RPA  Awards which were held at Battersea Evolution tonight (Wednesday 9th May).

Having been pitted against Bristol Rugby fly half Ian Madigan and back rower Dan Thomas, Booj came out on top to scoop the illustrious award which has been won previously by the likes of Mark Bright, Jack Lam, Matthew Morgan, Juan Pablo Socino and Tim Streather.

Speaking at the Awards, LeBourgeois said: “I am absolutely elated to have won this award, and against two other outstanding nominees is truly amazing, it is such an honour.

“To even be nominated for this award definitely comes down to the terrific club environment at Bedford, and the exciting style of game we’ve played this season.

“A big thanks to all my teammates and coaches for the encouragement, and to the club captains for nominating me for this award.”

Praise for Le Bourgeois started rolling in via Social Media from fans, fellow players and Championship clubs alike.

Dean Adamson tweeted: “The People’s Champ”, Blues fly half Will Hooley commented: "My man! Outstanding achievement!", while hooker Tom Lindsay added: "Congratulations Booj!!!!! Hell of a season."

Ed Taylor simply commented: "Congratulations skip!! Thoroughly deserved!" while George Edgson said: "There was only ever going to be one winner. No one deserves it more!" and Harry Sheppard added: "Smashed it - only ever one winner!"

Journalist Brendan Gallagher paid tribute to Le Bourgeois by saying: “This guy would be talked about in England terms if he was playing in the Premiership... You will go a long way to find a better all-round centre in the country. Outstanding every time I’ve watched him play over the last few seasons.”

Blues backs coach Paul Larkin said: “Booj, Bedford's leader of men. Thoroughly deserved! #thedifference”

Fellow Championship side Cornish Pirates sent a message of congratulations which read: “Congrats Bedford Blues and Michael Le Bourgeois on winning the Championship player of the year at the RPA Awards! Well done and well deserved.”
