Four brave members of the Bedford Blues squad were put through their paces this week as they were set the task of taking on the Meatcure Chilli Burger Challenge.

The task was quite simple. On Monday night, Tom James, Mike Howard, Pat Tapley and Christian Judge each had to simply work their way through a four patty tower burger, a dozen jalapeno bites, double fries and a milkshake in just 15 minutes.

With the rest of the squad’s encouragement, the foursome got stuck into the challenge wholeheartedly but it proved to be a step too far as none of them could quite complete the task in the time limit set out.

Speaking after the event, Strength and Conditioning Coach Andrew Petts said: “Although no one was quite able to complete the task, it was a great evening which all of the lads really enjoyed and brought everyone closer together. Mike Howard deserves a special mention for his valiant effort which saw him coming extremely close to completing the challenge – the others weren’t quite so close.

“We were told afterwards that one of the manager’s at Meat Cure had actually completed the challenge in just four and a half minutes. I think that dented a few of the boys egos until we found out that it hadn’t actually ‘stayed down’ for that long, so everyone left in good spirits.

“I’d like to thank everyone at Meat Cure for inviting us along and ensure that the guys were given a great feed after a hard training session. It was really appreciated and everyone had a great night out. Personally, I really wasn’t happy about the fries being served, but if the lads put in a big performance this weekend then it could be down to that… or the jalapenos!”

Talking about his own performance in the burger challenge, prop Chris Judge said: “I think that it is safe to say that I’m not built for speed!”
