Bedford Blues returned to pre-season training on Saturday morning with the players being put through their paces at by the coaching team as preparations for the 2016/17 Championship campaign got underway.

Saturday was the first opportunity for the squad to come together at Alexander Sports Centre and as the players got acquainted with one another, they were also given the once over by Strength and Conditioning Coach Andrew Petts and his team.

A series of speed and fitness tests were carried out on the players to make sure that they had stuck to their summer schedules before the squad got their hands on the ball and underwent a series of skill drills under the watchful eye of Director of Rugby Mike Rayer and Backs Coach Paul Larkin.

The session was rounded off with a number of touch rugby matches before the players headed back to Goldington Road for a nutritious breakfast and the chance to watch the Australia v England game.

Speaking after the session Director of Rugby Mike Rayer said: “It has been a great first session. The lads looked really sharp doing the skill practice and also during the touch games. They’ve got a couple of tough weeks ahead them, so it’s great to see them start off with such energy and enthusiasm.”

Strength and Conditioning Coach Andrew Petts added: “The initial test results have been pretty decent and everyone has come back in good shape. There is obviously a really long way to go until everyone will be ready for the intensity of the season ahead but it is a good start and I’m genuinely excited about what lays ahead.”

The Blues have also confirmed two further pre-season games that will go either side of their fixture against Saracens on Friday 19th August. Bedford will be heading off to Cardiff for a training camp before taking on Pontypridd on Saturday 13th August at Sardis Road. Two weeks later, the Welsh Principality team will make the trip to Goldington Road in a return fixture which kicks off at 3pm.
