BLUES LOOK FOR ALTERNATIVE FIXTURE

This week has seen a major change to the Greene King IPA Championship with the news that London Welsh have ceased to exist as a professional club after being refused permission to stay in the league by the RFU.

The Blues home fixture against London Welsh, scheduled for Friday 17th March, is now cancelled. However, Bedford Rugby Club are currently exploring all avenues to find a suitable quality replacement fixture on the same evening.

Currently in contact with a number of options, Bedford are confident of arranging an alternative fixture and still hosting a two-day rugby and beer festival on that weekend.

London Welsh's results for the season have been expunged from the Championship - including the Blues bonus point victory at Old Deer Park - and there will be no relegation from the second tier this season.

Speaking about the situation, Club Chairman Geoff Irvine said: "First and foremost our thoughts are with the fans, players, coaches and staff at London Welsh. As a club, we know only too well what this scenario is like and we wish everyone the very best for the future.

"The decision to expel London Welsh from the league has a big impact on all clubs in the Championship. We not only lose a valuable five points in the league table, but face the prospect of losing revenue with a fixture missing.

“We are working hard to ensure that quality rugby will be taking place on Friday 17th March as well as our much-anticipated beer festival across that weekend.

"The last thing that we'd want to deprive our fans of is a home fixture on the final weekend of the Six Nations and we are confident of finding a suitable opposition to fulfil a superb night of entertainment.”

Keep an eye on the website for more information and ticketing details. All Season Ticket holders, pre-purchased tickets and hospitality guests would gain entry without additional charge for any replacement fixture.
