Bedford Blues will again be hosting a national Under 19s 10-a-side tournament on Sunday 24 April following the success of last year’s event as the Club help showcase some of the most talented young rugby players in the country.

The invitation competition proved a superb initiative last season with Bedford Blues Academy narrowly clinching the title having defeated Worcester Warriors in the first round and Nottingham in the final with their only loss of the tournament against East Midlands.

The eight club competition is designed to demonstrate the player development work being carried out by a number of Championship Clubs as well as providing a competitive end of season focus for those taking part.

Joining the host club will be Academy sides from Championship clubs London Scottish, Moseley, Doncaster Knights, London Welsh, Ealing Trailfinders as well as Loughborough Students and Esher.

Speaking about the tournament, Bedford Blues Chairman Geoff Irvine, who is also chair of the Championship Clubs Committee at the RFU, said: “The Championship Academies play a key role in developing players for first team squads and you don’t have to look any further than here at Bedford to see that impact.

“The RFU are really supportive of the concept and we hope that it will continue to be a beneficial experience for the youngsters taking part. In a few years some of them could even be playing regular Championship, Premiership or international rugby.”

Director of Rugby, Mike Rayer added: “I echo the thoughts of our Chairman and am pleased to see us host this event again. There are so many fine examples of the work Championship clubs do to develop young players, exaggerated this week by Glasgow’s re-signing of Ali Price, Josh Bassett’s fine form for Wasps and Duncan Taylor’s superb performance for Scotland last weekend against Wales; all former Blues Academy graduates.”

“We hope Blues supporters will come out and support the competition and potential future rugby stars.”

Further details on the tournament will be available through the website nearer the date with adult tickets priced at just £3.00 including a competition programme and free entry for Under 18s; only available on the gate.
