BLUES ANNOUNCE QUARTET OF SIGNINGS

Having already captured Nick Fenton-Wells on a permanent deal, Bedford Blues have moved quickly to secure the services of one of the most exciting youngsters plying his trade in National League Two as well as re-signing three of the current squad.

Fullback and winger Jim Wigglesworth has joined Bedford Blues from near neighbours Cambridge where he has been a standout performer this season. The 20 year old England Counties star hails from Derbyshire and includes Hull and Nottingham as his former clubs as well as a summer season with Rugby League outfit Hull FC.

Putting pen to paper on new deals at Godington Road are Back Rower Joe Vandermolen, Hooker Charlie Clare and Scrum Half Darryl Veenendaal.

The 2014/15 season will be Vandermolen's third with the club having joined from Southend following a successful trial in 2012. The versatile 24 year old is primarily a Number Eight but has shown that he can comfortably play at openside or blindside flanker as well.

Clare, 22, arrived at Bedford last summer following four years in the Leicester Academy which incorporated loan moves to Loughborough Students, Nottingham and Jersey. The youngster has quickly established himself in the front row and has impressed throughout his first full season of senior rugby with the Blues, with some strong performances.

Veenendaal may only be 24 years old but he has been a long term project for the Blues coaching staff. Having come through the ranks at the Blues Academy, Veenendaal has been a member of the first team squad since 2010 and has developed into an explosive number nine who displays not only superb offensive awareness but also an impressive defensive prowess.

Speaking about the new signings, Blues Director of Rugby Mike Rayer said: "I'm really excited to have a number of players commit their future to the club as well as welcoming a young player of Jim's talents through the gates.

"I've had a good chat with the chairman to establish where we need to strengthen this summer and we are working hard to identify players who are the right fit for this club. We need to be as competitive as possible next season and having a player of Jim’s potential join us is a step in the right direction.

"Joe, Charlie and Darryl continue to develop as rugby players and all three have progressed extremely well this season and I'm sure that all of the fans that come to Goldington Road on a Saturday afternoon are looking forward to seeing them in action again next season.

"We still have five games remaining in the Greene King IPA Championship and everyone is focused on finishing as strongly as possible so that we can head into the next campaign in positive fashion."

Bedford Blues welcome Rotherham to Goldington Road on March 29 with the game being shown live on Sky Sports. Kick off is at 5pm and you can buy discounted tickets for the match via www.bedfordrugby.co.uk.
