Blues Academy vs Cambridge U21 XV
The Blues Academy face a tough home game on Wednesday against an older Cambridge U21 XV. The game is at Goldington Road, kick off 7.30 pm. Admission is free, the bar is open, and all are welcome.
Cambridge, who were relegated from National One to National Two (South) at the end of last season, have recruited well over the summer and started their National Two South campaign with a good win away at Redruth on Saturday.
Blues Academy Director Denis Ormesher said … “This will be a tough game. Cambridge have some quality players and the advantage of being a couple of years older than the Bedford squad. This will be a good test for us. It will be good to welcome back so many "old boys" of the Blues Academy."
Bedford field a number of last season’s Academy squad; prop Matt Collins, 2nd row Ben Latimer, flanker Joe Bercis, fly half Joe Tarrant, winger Mike Diponio and winger/full back Chris Lord (who has just signed for the Blues 1st XV) are in the starting line up.
Making their Blues debuts in the starting line up are No.8 Ryan Brett-Williams (ex-Bedford School), centre Dan Hope (ex-Worcester Academy) and full back Freddie Henley-Hunter (North Walsham). Saracens, and Wales U18 scrum half Ben Calder, who appeared for the Blues 1st XV in their pre-season friendly against Northampton Saints, is on the bench. Making thier Blues debuts from the bench are props Josh Piertese and Tom Webb, 2nd row Bradley Scharff, flankers Reece Lane and Dan Martin, and wingers Luke Hibberd and Harry Chater. Bedford are captained by flanker Kennett O'Neill.
Cambridge have selected a strong squad with four players who appeared in the Cambridge 1st XV league victory against Redruth on Saturday (front rows Callum Miller and James Palmer, and half backs Jack Daly and Ben Penfold), and ten players who have come through the Blues Academy over the last couple of years.
