Lost 13-26

It will be a case of back to the drawing board for Bedford Blues after they suffered a second home defeat of the season going down 13-26 against a revitalised Moseley on Friday evening.

There were 2,545 fans crammed into Goldington Road for the Friday night lights but despite a positive start, the Blues just weren’t able to break down a stubborn Moseley defence who seized their opportunities when they were presented.

Moseley Fly half Caolan Ryan missed a penalty in the third minute after his pack won a penalty on a Bedford scrum and then Jake Sharp pulled an effort just left of the uprights when the visitors were pinged for not releasing a tackle.

Bedford were the first on the score sheet though when lively winger Neville Edwards crossed the whitewash when the home side sent the ball along the backline to the right winger. Sharp added the extras and all looked good after eight minutes.

Ryan found his range with a 15th minute penalty after more good work by his pack, but Sharp retaliated with three points of his own after Tom Armes was alert to scoop in a loose ball and wasn’t released on the floor.

As the half wore on though, Moseley started to enjoy a bit more of possession and territory and they made it count. Bedford infringed at a ruck but Buster Lawrence played the advantage to gallop clear of the Blues defence to score close to the posts with Ryan levelling the scores with the conversion.

After the break, Bedford thought they were over the line when Armes scrambled through but the ref said he was held up. Following a penalty at the resulting scrum Sharp converted the three points to inch the home side in front but Moseley replied with their second try of the evening. The visitors mauled well before hooker Rhys Buckley went over the line but Ryan couldn’t convert.

The Blues cause wasn’t helped when first Sharp and then Aaron Morris had to leave the field because of injury but Moseley defended stoutly when they were reduced to 14 when Buckley was carded for persistent team infringements and Ryan extended the lead with his second penalty of the evening.

When Moseley were back to their full 15 they scored a third try of the game. Winger Matt Williams was given a sniff of space and he made the Blues pay as he brushed of challenges to score in the corner following an impressive break down the left. It was too far wide for Ryan to convert but when he added a penalty in the 76th minute, the game was too far out of the Blues reach.
