Bedford Blues Academy vs Leicester Tigers Academy
For the second week running the Blues Academy lost to an RFU funded Premiership Academy going down by 33pts – 7 against Leicester Tigers Academy at Goldington Road.
Bedford kicked long down the hill to start proceedings, allowing the Blues pack to chase. The opening scrums were dominated by Tigers. The first try of the game was in the 23rd minute, as Bedford gave away a penalty deep in the Tigers 22 and then a quick error gave a free kick which gave Leicester momentum to move the ball wide for a try from George Fossey, converted by fly half John Hargreaves. The young Tigers were in the ascendency and Owen Hills took full advantage of a Bedford error to score in the left corner, following a series of strong close range drives just before half time. Hargreaves converted to give Tigers a half time lead of 14pts - 0.
Tigers stretched their lead to 21pts – 0 with a try from 2nd row Matthew Hubbart, converted by Hargreaves. From the start of the second half, it was clear to see that Bedford were more effective at the breakdown, as the ball was presented quicker, allowing centre Freddie Henley-Hunter to chip ahead to beat two defenders to score under the posts. Fly half Cameron Gregory converted to make the score 21pts – 7 to Tigers. Leicester stretched their lead by using their powerful backline runners to get over the gain line, for hooker George Nairns, and centre Wesley Douglas to score further tries. A conversion from Hargreaves completed the scoring to give Tigers a well deserved 33pts – 7 win.
Blues’ Academy coach Rich Candlin said ... “This was an improved performance. The Bedford players showed impressive resilience, as they defended to the end of the game. They demonstrated maturity and progress from last week's match against Northampton.”
