Bedford Blues Academy v Wasps Academy

Academy Academy
Won 13 -12

Bedford Academy beat the Wasps Academy on a miserable wet night by 13pts - 12 at Goldington Road.  Playing down the slope, with the weather behind them, the Blues took a lead of 13pts – 5 at half time through a dominant forward performance, before Wasps fought back in the second to narrow the gap, but leave Bedford with a 13pts – 12 win.

Bedford took an early lead when centre Cameron Gregory-Ring kicked a penalty in the first 5 minutes.  Wasps hit back straight form the kick off.  Bedford made a mess of the return and Wasps drove into the Blues 22.   Wasps won a lineout and ex-Bedford School captain No 8 Olly Lyons drove over for a try to make the score 5pts – 3 to Wasps.  Bedford began to settle and the Blues pack took control, with Wasps conceding a string of penalties as they fought to keep the Blues at bay.  Bedford took the lead with a well worked drive from a 5m lineout, with flanker Joe Brock getting the touch down to put Bedford into a 8pts – 5 lead.  Direct from the kick off Bedford drove back into the Wasps 22.  After a period of sustained Blues pressure, and a further string of penalties against Wasps, the Wasps open side was sent to the sin bin.  Bedford won a 5m lineout and, in a repeat of the first score, Brock scored from the lineout drive to make the half time score 13pts – 5 to Bedford.

The second half conditions began to worsen and made handling even more difficult.  Wasps playing down the slope, with the elements, began to take advantage and put Bedford under pressure.  Lyons scored his second try from a strong close range run, the try was converted and Wasps narrowed the gap to 13pts -12.  Five minutes later Wasps had the chance to take the lead with a penalty, but the kick was sent wide.  Bedford fought back into the Wasps 22 to push for a final score.  The Wasps defence held, and the Blues ran down the clock to take a narrow 13pts - 12 win.

Blues Academy Director Denis Ormesher said …. “ We were pleased with the performance in the first half – our pack took control and we played the right tactics keeping Wasps under pressure in their own 22.  The two tries from short range lineouts were text book stuff."

“We showed less control in the second half when we tried to force the game too much, when we should have stuck to the tactics that had worked so well in the first half.  Too often we made some basic errors, or tried over ambitious play, and gave the ball away.  We need to learn how to manage, and control, a game better.”

“However to get a win against Wasps, one of the RFU funded Academies, is a great result.  We now have our third game in eight days to prepare for; a tough away game against the RAF U23 XV on Saturday”
