Won 8 - 5

The Blues Academy scraped a narrow win over Loughborough University U21 XV, in monsoon-like weather at Goldington Road on Saturday.  Down by 5pts – 3 at half time, the Blues scored early in the second half to win by 8pts – 5.

The game started, after a One Minute Silence, in recognition of Remembrance Sunday, in very heavy rain, which persisted for much of the game. Handling for both sides was extremely difficult, as the ball, like the proverbial bar of soap, skidded around Goldington Road.  Bedford took the lead after 30 minutes with a penalty from winger Scott Lyle. The students hit back when a well placed kick forced Bedford to kick for touch and conceded a lineout to the students on the Blues 22.  James Thacker, the England U16 international No 8 from two years ago, won the ball at the back of the line and ran 20m, without being touched, to score in the corner, to make the score 5 pts – 3 to Loughborough at half time.

Bedford started the second half well and from the kick off pinned the students down in their 22.  The Blues won a 5m lineout and after a series of drives prop Hayden King went over the corner to put the Blues ahead by 8pts – 5, which remained the final score.

Blues Academy Director Denis Ormesher said .…The conditions in the first half made it very difficult to play any rugby.  It was never going to be a high scoring game, and was a very close game, which either side could have won.  The game left us with some mixed feelings.

On one hand we made too many mistakes, and did not control the game as well as we would have liked.  On the other hand we got a win against an older side, in terrible weather, playing badly.  If the old cliché that a good side is one that wins when they are playing badly is true, then we are glad to take the win and learn from it.
