Why would Leigh want to go to Glasgow?

Come on people, get real.

I imagine it is because they offered him a full time job. Something we cannot do.

Whilst I am dissapointed Leigh is going, it's nice to see that he's going to 'the next level' as from what I know (and I may be wrong) that Glasgow, are professional & play in the European Cup.

Thanks for the memories Leigh, I'm sure you will have a soft spot down at GR.

At least it's happend early enough for Rudi & his team to find a replacement....or is there one in the club already?

Leigh Hinton was my player of the season. He was personally responsible for numerous Bedford wins as well as being the top scorer in LD1.
He is the type of quality player that Bedford should build the team around if we are to progress next season and this loss will not help matters.
The directors could have approached the supporters to sponsor Leigh and I am sure we would have contributed so that the club could have paid him the appropriate salary.
The supporters will be very disappointed.

Althought it will be very sad to see any of the players go, we have had a wonderful season, all the players have been brilliant ambassadors for the club both on and off the field and any players that do leave us I wish them all well and hope that they will come back and visit the club and supporters whenever they want, they will always be welcome.
Good luck to you all and thanks for a great season.

I sent the following message to the BBC via its web site today:

Although you say that your copywright only allows you to broadcast why can't the BBC negotiate a commercial agreement, say with the clubs, to distribute supplies of the recent Powergen Shield final (Saturday 23rd April between Plymouth and Bedford). I know of many supporters that are very very keen to get hold of a copy of this recording.

I suspect I will get a response full of red tape and all that and am sure that they couldn't give a monkeys about what one individual wants - but then you get nothing if you don't try - If I get no joy I may take it up with my MP

PS sad to see Leigh going - I'm a bit surprised he has picked Scotland but I wish him all the best - As Robin says - what a good advert for us if players can see Bedford as a stepping stone

Although Scottish rugby administration seems to be in a poor state (according to English journalists I might add), I think it is a bit unfair to criticise all of Scottish rugby and in particular a certain persons reasons for moving " north of the border". One should look closer to home and realise that with a playing budget of £500,000, we are unable, unfortunately, to keep such talented players such as Leigh Hinton.

Contrary to your beliefs about Scott Murray, he seems to be doing fine at domestic level and realistically every player needs to think about their life span in rugby terms. He's from "north of the border" and good for him for wanting to go back to his roots. We don't criticise Ben for stying close to home so perhaps we should be a little more open minded when it comes to other players realising their best option is to stay close to home and think about their future outside of weekly matches.

P.S. Thanks Edinburgh Rugby for the free tickets, had a ball.

At the threat of being controversial, its NOT a great shame Leigh is going to Glasgow. I think its brilliant, and damn good luck to him.

So why is this brilliant? Because, Leigh is an exceptional player and I think everyone will agree, is above ND1 standard and no matter who he played for this year, I would be very surprised if he didnt move on (Bristol excluded due to promotion). To that extent, I hope that Bedford will be seen as a club you will get noticed at, will attract the top players over and over again and whether they stay for a year, two, three, can only do good for the club by imparting their skill, knowledge and experience.

I agree, it would be great if he stayed, and I would have loved to see him stay (even although this is a selfish statement), but good luck to him. He has served us very well, winning kick and all that, some very exciting rugby and I hope he enjoys the wet weather and the miserable, tight, Weegies. :)

Great shame that Leigh is leaving. Thanks for all you've done for us.

At the risk of this sounding like sour grapes, why on earth would someone travel north of the border to play their rugby? Scottish rugby is in an abysmal state. Look at Scott Murray - superb down here and he's certainly gone off the boil up there.

ENGLISH DUO JOIN GLASGOW
22-Apr-05
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Leigh Hinton, this season’s leading scorer in the English national first division, has signed to switch from Bedford to Glasgow. Mike Roberts, from London Wasps, also is moving north.

Roberts is a tall, strong wing – 6ft 3in and 16st 5lb. The 22-year-old was a member of England’s sevens squad in the past season.

“Mike Roberts is a powerful wing who has been part of Wasps’ first-team squad. We’re sure he will enhance our back three, especially with the departure of Sean Lamont,” Hugh Campbell, Glasgow’s head coach, commented today.

Hinton, a 26-year-old stand-off and full back, kicked the winning penalty goal in Bedford’s 14-13 victory in the Powergen Shield final against Plymouth Albion at Twickenham on Saturday. His season’s tally now stands at 352 points.

Before joining Bedford in 2002 Hinton was with Moseley and Worcester. While at Moseley he played for the English National Divisions XV against the 2001 Australian touring team.

“Leigh Hinton has been exceptional in the English first division as top-scorer in that league. He will be a valuable addition to our squad,” the coach remarked.

Roberts has signed for two years and Hinton for one. They join five new signings previously announced – Craig Hamilton from Newcastle Falcons, Tim Barker from Ulster, Colin Shaw and Steve Swindall from Glasgow Hawks, and Ben Prescott from Aberdeen GSFP.

I never want to loose this feeling
Now that I can just about be heard again (hard luck family!)I want to add to the comments below.
Saturday was a day that will always remembered, from the brilliantly organised buses (huge thanks to Margaret and Followers) through to the match (boys you did us proud, the result was never in dispute!!! You were ALL fantastic, heros to a man!)
The chanting continued on the concourse, much to the bewilderment of the arriving Bath supporters who couldn't understand the other,'real' Blues excitement. We definitely made more noise than they did even during the game they deserved to loose.
The only time I gave any thought to Plymouth was in the carpark when chatting to some supporters who said they wouldn't be back until 10.30pm and that they didn't realise they could sit where they liked for our match (they brought over 20 buses, but did we know?)
The lads made us,the supporters feel special back at the club by mixing with us, signing programes, suffering endless photo calls and loving it all. Arthur, wind me up again and your punishment will be greater than on Sat!
Lastly, I cannot believe we can't get a video of OUR game, I've worn out the 60 seconds that Look East showed on monday.
STANDING OVATION FOR THE BOYS WHEN THEY RUN ON VERSUS BRISTOL

Thanks to everyone in BLUE.

Peter Deakin it works for me, as a committed Blues supporter but originally a Bristolian I manage to see quite a few Shoguns games now they are on Sundays, funny my mother only gets a visit when there is a home fixture at the Memorial ground. I wonder what she does with herself all summer. Before I get jumped on I also know where my allegiances lie as to the result of tomorrows game (a win for the Blues but Bristol are promoted its simple).

Being as this weekend we should have a good crowd of between 2500-3000, i would like to propose a new idea..3000 is great but to encourage any more , people need to be able see the game, with only the one stand, and the small terracing this figure is about our limit for a descent spectator view...How about we all rally round, we have done it before Try Fund, Share Issue, how about a Stand Fund, i am sure if we all full together we can raise enough for a small stand, doesnt have to be to fancy, maybe 500 seats, any-one willing to give it a go...

The Corn Exchange in BEDFORD (owned by Bedford BC) has a superb HUGE screen. Could the club request the Council loan us the use of their building for a couple of hours , as a gesture of goodwill to honour the achievemnet of the BLUES. The building can seat around 800 - Show the video at a set date/time and open the bars at the facility - we get to watch the game on a HUGE screen, the Council get to recognise our achievement and the Coucil bars get some profit to cover any costs - SORTED. Easy to arrange and a great way to re-watch the game.

Well, finally I have managed to get online for 1st time since the weekend. I am proud and happy to say that I was there in the middle of the huge Blues crowd on Saturday. When I was a regular at Goldington Road as a teenager I dreamt that we would go to Twickenham and win the Cup. Well, it took a long time (I will be 40 next month) but finally it came true. I thought that Plymouth might be a bit too strong for the Blues but it turned out to be one of the most satisfying games of rugby I have ever seen. I was pleased to see a Bedford team playing with such passion.

To complete a perfect weekend I completed my 3rd London Marathon (Didn't stop for a break like the other Bedford runner!) on Sunday.

I am now trying to persuade my wife that it isn't a bad idea to do a 6 hour round trip to every home game next season and that a season ticket would be a good investment. It's not working at the moment!!:-))

Nick, that's exactly what's wrong with the games commercialisation in the UK. The Beeb hold the rights, don't show it, won't video it, won't produce anything about it, and prevent others from doing the same. How on earth can that be in the interests of the game?

POWERGEN SHIELD INFO

Regarding the possible sale of any match-day video from last Saturday, unfortunately the powers that be who hold the rights to the video will not allow it to be sold on any commercial basis. However we do have a copy of it which will be shown at the club on a date to be announced, a case of watch this space!!

Also it is planned that people will be able to buy a disk full of Nigel's excellent pictures from the day in the near future. We're just working out costings and which pictures to be included at the moment.

Also balance of payment for the End of Season Ball on May 7th is required. Please give in at the Followers' office for the attention of Lynne Bedford.
Now have a voice back. Jackpot tickets will not be sold in whispers this week. You have been warned! I'd love a copy of Nigel's photos on CD, not to mention a video/DVD of the match. Are we any further on these?

As that Welsh singer said...."I was there"!! I met a friend of mine near my proper seat for the Cup match and he said that it was a wall of sound coming from the Blue's supporters in the East stand during our game. I know I could hardly speak for two days afterwards.

Does winning put anything into the coffers?

Another friend suggested that Powergen should pay for the electricity for the floodlights for next season.

What a day it was on Saturday!!!

I think the decision to sit together was key as I reckon there wasn't a huge difference in numbers of Blues & Plymouth fans, just that we sat together rather than all round the ground!

I also thought that we helped Leeds out sing Bath as well, as I noticed there was quite a few Blues fans cheering for the tykes!

Thanks again to all who made it a memorable day, the players, coaches, directors, backroom staff and of course the followers who somehow managed to organise so many people onto the buses!

Just a reminder that any member who has not yet sent in a vote for The Followers' Player of the Year should do so by Saturday. After Saturday I should think many want to vote for every member of the squad!
I'll just add my thoughts to those expressed by everyone else. What a wonderful day! My fellow stewards in the East stand were amazed at the enthusiasm of all in blue and were appreciative of the way in which you moved away to your allocated seats. I expect to get told off for hugging members of a team whilst wearing my steward's tabard!
I think the idea of getting together really worked well. It was hard to spot the Plymouth supporters as they were spread out. The Telegraph reporter certainly got his description right. We were very noisy and passionate!

The commemorative souvenir brochure "The Road to Twickenham" was excellent and I will keep it as a momento of the best day I have experienced for a long time in supporting the Blues. The article that impressed me most was "Creating a Legacy" by Rudolf Straeuli. The premiership days when Rudi played for us are a very fond memory but the Blues win at Twickenham should and could be the start of our progress to better things.

You were right, David. Seated in a very different place in the stadium I could hear distinctly "Bedford! Bedford!" during the Bath-Leeds match.

PS For those who were not able to access the pictures today, it may have been that too many were trying at the same time. Coupled with that, there were six times as many collections as usual, so possibly my ISP's server could not cope! Try again some other time, I'd suggest.

The coverage on Anglia was awful and the BBC got the score wrong for the second time this season. It will be interesting if the Saints get relegated ( not very likely I know even if they do finish bottom) Who will get the bulk of the coverage then ?

I have sent Robert leggatt 104 images from the day. 20% of those I took, I could have sent many more! We all owe Robert a great deal in putting up our pictures, not only for those who can say " I was there" but for those both in the UK and overseas who are Blues fans.
If there is interest, I will produce CD of full Res pictures for sale, proceeds split between the Matt King Fund, the club and me, to cover costs only.It was a special day for me - very special and I was priviledged to go `backstage` to record our day. Thanks to all who made that possible and most of all, thanks to the team, on and off the feild, that produced the result that we all dreamed of.

THANK YOU

Thank you to the players who not only won the shield but did it in style and then came and mixed so readily with the masses at the party afterwards. I am not articulate enough to put in to words my feelings so thank you will have to do.

Thank you to Geoff Irvine and the other directors not only for their financial support but also for the business acumen that has seen the club through such troubled times

Thank you to Rudi and of course Colin I have not always agreed with some of your choices or decisions but you were right and I was wrong. That’s why you’re doing the job and not me

Thank you to all the people who I don’t know but who work tirelessly behind the scenes doing the countless jobs it takes to run a club

Thank you to Margaret Appleton and all her “coach commanders” for what was a logistical miracle on Saturday

And finally thank you to all the fellow supporters who made Saturday an occasion that my family and I (and am sure many others) will remember fondly for many years

Well done you Blues bring it on Bristol

Still ready to receive more, but today please - I have a job during the week! I think we have enough of the score board and flag, but if there are any shots which show something others have missed, please send! Any good shots of the crowd of supporters? The collection is growing into quite an archive now!

It was great to see Colin Jackson, who is very much a part in this celebration. We haven't forgotten you, Colin!

If you managed to bring a colleague or friend who is not a club member, how about persuading him/her to join next season? It would be great to top 2000 each home game.

Finally, thanks to all, particularly those behind the scenes, who helped to make yesterday such a memorable day.

What a feeling yesterday - a brilliant day out and the atmosphere at the club afterwards was terrific. Well done to all.

Been difficult to find a mention in the national press though, which is a great pity considering there were probably at least 10k watching it. All I could find was the following in the Independant. Not very accurate, but then it is the Indy.

In yesterday's Powergen Shield contest at Twickenham, played before half-empty stands in the same way the minis used to get a runaround before the county cup final, a last-ditch try from the centre Leigh Hinton gave the Bedford Blues a 14-13 win over Plymouth Albion.

Worth the wait, wasn't it!

BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT BLUES!!!! What a wonderful experience! Memories? Meeting Colin J and wife outside the main entrance and then son Gervase and friends at gate 31 decked in blues warpaint and shirts [a five-year range], hearing the 'Bedford, Bedford' and 'Grrrr' still echoing under east stand after the game, being glared at by a Bath supporter when joining in the continuing chant at a prolonged pause during the following final, John M shaking Rudi's hand and exchanging Grrrrs at the team's return to GR and noticing with sadness Leigh Hinson's scarred left cheek. There are many others which I shall treasure.

Just recovering from yesterday, the build up, THE final, the celebrations after. Fantastic support, hope we pick up a thousand more regulars as a result. Brilliant the way that the players and coaching staff were genuinely delighted to mix with the crowds at GR. Long may Bedford continue as a real family club, no prima donna's here! Thanks also to Chris Bailward for buying my spare tickets. He scored a try in the 1975 final and travelled up from Somerset with his son. Here's to a victory in our last home match against Bristol!!

I would just like to add on to what everyone else is saying. I too had a brilliant day out yesterday from getting on the coach in the morning to coming back to GR for the party. I was in the scrum bar listening to everyone sing and i have to say it was great. I didnt know that JP, craig moir, chris johnson and matt allan could sing so well! That was the highlight of my evening.

Thanks blues for such a memorable day and that will go down in history as the best day ever!!!!!!

For those who went home from the game, the following: - You missed a great party, NO you missed a fantastic party!

When the Blues have a party they do it in style!

Got home about 1am, to all the ladies who danced with me thanks, you made an old man very happy, to those who did not shame!

Best moments of last night, talking to one of our most loyal fans ‘John’ he had nearly lost his voice going Grrrrrrr!!!(© Bedford Blues), he was over the moon with the whole day and by the number of Twickenham passes he had been given.

Next best shaking the ‘Big fellas’ (Rudi) hand, and failing yet again to put into words how much his presence here in Bedford means to us it is a privilege to be in this mans company.

Many thanks to ALL who were involved in the organisation of last night and the transport to the event I am glad it was them not me doing it!

Fantastic result! Especially pleasurable to see the team maintain perfect discipline in those last minutes as Plymouth edged closer and closer. What relief to see that ball pop up and forward at the end as the pressure broke them and not us :-)

Nice pre-match interview with Rudi in a South African paper here - would have been a much easier match if we had been playing Plymouth Argyle tho :-)

Bedford, - Sunday, April 17, 2005 at 09:22:27 (BST)
Bedfordshire on Sunday report:

IT was heart-stoppingly exciting, nail-bitingly tense, but the Blues came through to win the Powergen Shield at Twickenham.

Behind from the second minute, Bedford spent the rest of the game playing catch up until they were awarded a penalty 25 yards out and to the right of the posts.

Normally it was the sort of kick you would back Leigh Hinton to get, but it had not been his day so far.

Two relatively easy penalties and a conversion had been missed and so the pressure was really on.

Some of the players and many in the crowd could not bear to watch, but Hinton looked the coolest man on the field, although I doubt he felt it.

A swig from a water bottle, a glance at the posts and then back came the right boot and over went the ball. Hinton, who could so easily have been the scapegoat for a defeat, was a victorious hero.

What a game! Bedford left it late, but they deserved to win because it was they who played the attacking rugby.

For the most part Plymouth were content to sit back and counter-attack when the Blues made an error.

Their pack was formidable, but Bedford refused to be intimidated with Jon Phillips and Arthur Brenton battling away in the engine room, the front row showing their mettle and Ben Lewitt and Nic Strauss turning up everywhere.

Outside the scrum there was no contest. The Bedford backs had flair, Plymouth relied on strength.

Ian Vass and Ali Hepher were a partnership-and-a-half, Hinton and Matt Allen always looking for openings and Craig Moir, Mike Staten and Mark Harris ready to punish any Plymouth error.

Bedford had their moments of luck, notably when Plymouth had what looked like a perfectly good try ruled out just before the interval, but fortune is expected to favour the brave.

But it couldn't have been a worse start as far as Bedford were concerned. Having got a scrum on the Plymouth 22 after a knock-on, Paramore picked up at the back of the scrum only for Plymouth to intercept and charge clear.

The break was ended five metres from the line by Hinton's tackle, but the Plymouth forwards piled in and Tooala went over so close to the line that it must have been touch and go whether he was in touch.

The referee was happy and Pritchard's conversion from the touchline made it 7-0 to Plymouth after just two minutes.

Little went right for Bedford as they tried to get back into the game. A couple of knock-ons ended promising moves, they were penalised at a scrum in the Plymouth 22 and then, the unkindest cut of all, the touch judge deciding that Harris had strayed a fraction of a millimetre outside his own 22 before clearing.

Plymouth attacked from the line out, Bedford could not get the ball clear and when they were eventually penalised, Carrington kicked the penalty.

Nevertheless, despite being ten points down, Bedford were playing the more adventurous rugby and there were breaks by Hinton, Staten and the impressive Lewitt. It took a penalty by Hinton though to get Bedford's first points on the board.

And before they had a chance to claw their way any further back, another mistake handed Plymouth three more points.

Johnson's throw to the back of the line had Phillips stretching; he could not control the ball and Plymouth pinched it. Their forwards had five charges at the line before the ball finally came back to Carrington who settled for a drop goal.

Back came Bedford with Moir and Harris in full flight and the referee playing a long advantage before deciding to give Hinton a chance to kick a penalty.

Another good period of Bedford pressure followed with Vass, Allen and Harris working the ball one way and Vass, Volland and Paramore switching it the other. Unfortunately when the inevitable penalty came, Hinton missed it.

Bedford were making too many unforced errors both in attack and defence at this stage and they had two let-offs in the dying seconds of the half.

First the referee called play back for a knock-on when Plymouth went over after Staten had made a hash of dealing with a kick into the Bedford 22. Then Carrington made a hash of a fairly straightforward penalty.

Given those circumstances then, the Blues must have been happy to go in only 13-6 down at half time.

Tonga'uiha was on at the start of the second half in place of Volland but soon fell foul of a touch judge which had Bedford surrendering a good position.

But they were soon back on the attack with Strauss fly-hacking and charging and Johnson suddenly finding himself in the clear but not trusting his pace and throwing a wild pass.

Time and again though, to their evident frustration, the Blues were pulled up by the referee as the forwards sought to exert pressure.

And you really thought it wasn't going to be their trophy when Hinton missed a penalty from right in front of the posts. A minute later they had a line out five metres from the line, but the ball shot forward as the pack started their drive.

From the next line-out much further out, Bedford did get a drive going and when the ball was let out, Hepher's long pass led to Moir making a break. Harris was on hand and although he was tackled just short, he retained possession and dived over.

Hinton's conversion would have put the scores level, but he sent it wide.

Sixteen minutes to go, two points in it and already Plymouth started to run the clock down, keeping possession with the forwards and only letting it out as a last possible option.

Bedford can wrestle with the best though and their perseverance was rewarded with five minutes to go when Plymouth conceded a penalty.

So it was all eyes on Hinton - and he didn't let his side down. The kick soared between the posts and the Blues were ahead for the first time in the match.

And so followed the most nervous few minutes Bedford supporters can surely have ever had to endure. Drop goal attempts were spurned and although it looked as though Bedford had clinched it when Johnson dived over, the referee decreed the pass to him had been forward.

Plymouth had the ball too often for everybody's nerves in injury time, but the Bedford tackling was too good for them. The Powergen Shield was on its way to Goldington Road where the celebrations went on deep into the night.

Scorers. Bedford: Try - Harris; pens - Hinton (3). Plymouth: Try - Tooala; con - Pritchard; pen - Carrington; drop goal - Carrington.

Bedford: Harris, Moir, Hinton, Allen, Staten (Brown), Hepher, Vass, Volland (Tonga'uiha), Johnson, Brooks, Phillips, Brenton, Strauss, Lewitt, Paramore (Brady).

WELL DONE YOU BLUES !!! Another great team performance and we fully deserved the win. Pretty tense holding on at the end but we kept them out. Well done to the team, management, coaching staff etc including the folk who organised the buses - a day to remember - lots of good memories. Hopefully we can pack out GR on Saturday. It would be terrific if we could pull in the biggest gate of the season to show our appreciation and capture some of those extra supporters who came along yesterday. Well done too Leeds - good to see the underdog come out on top.

100% TWICKENHAM RECORD INTACT!!!!!

Can anyother club boast that after 2 appearances?

Enjoyed the "big day" out at HQ but really no Deep End, Loud and Proud from the West Stand it was then.

Agree with Sam about Spencer's tackle, lined up and executed to perfection.

GREAT DAY, GREAT VICTORY.

Hinton hits home to end Bedford’s 30-year Twickenham wait
by Dave Barton
Bedford Blues 14
Plymouth Albion 13

LEIGH HINTON landed arguably the most important penalty of his prolific points scoring career as Bedford banished 30 years of Twickenham blues to lift the Powergen Challenge Shield today.

Hinton – the top points scorer in National League One – recovered from three misses to kick the match-winner in the 75th minute to give Bedford their first senior cup triumph since they beat Rosslyn Park in 1975.

The 26-year-old whose merry-go-round round career has included Moseley, Orrell, and now Bedford, kicked all 15 points in the semi-final win over another former club Pertemps Bees.

And he said: “Unfortunately I missed a few easy ones early on in the game but it was nice to get the winner and hold on for the last five minutes. When you stick the winner over you kind of forget about the others you miss.

“It’s been 30 years since the club have been to Twickenham, let alone won anything, and you can see from the number of fans who have made the trip today how much it means to them.”

Bedford, with Rudi Straeuli back at the helm, have ambitions to return to the Zurich Premiership and the former Springbok boss believes victory will be an important stepping stone towards that.

“We have a long-term plan. You have to take small steps before you can take long strides,” he said. “But this win has put Bedford back on the rugby map.”

Albion had led 13-6 at half-time despite losing wing James Pritchard with a broken collar and skipper Danny Thomas said: “It’s a long way home and it’s an even longer one now.

“All the boys have done exceptionally well and to lose by one point in the final at Twickenham is devastating. We have got a massive game at Otley next week and we have got to get the boys on the physio table and our minds right before we go up there.”

Plymouth needed less than two minutes to get on the scoresheet when Bryan Shelbourne intercepted a Bedford pass from a scum on halfway and sprinted 40 metres before he was hauled down short of the line by Matt Allen. Samoan Alfie Tooala was on hand to pick up and barge over for James Pritchard to convert.

Hinton kept Bedford in the hunt with two penalties but missed another straightforward effort.

Plymouth thought they had another try when Luke Arscott took advantage of Mike Staten’s fumble to dribble ahead and touch down but referee Bruce Robertson pulled play back for the Bedford winger’s knock-on rather than give Albion the advantage.

Hinton’s radar went astray again with a missed penalty he would normally slot with no trouble.

But the Blues kept the pressure on and were rewarded in the 64th minute when full-back Mark Harris came into the line at pace and although Nat Saumi’s ankle-tap tackle brought him down, his momentum took him to the line.

Then Hinton stepped up to kick the winner when Nigel Cane was penalised for handling the ball on the floor and despite Albion’s valiant attempts to run in a clinching try from all parts of the pitch, Bedford held on.

Bedford Blues: M Harris; C Moir, L Hinton, M Allen, Mike Staten (S Brown 73); A Hepher, I Vass; M Volland (S Tonga’uiha h-t), C Johnson (capt), J Brooks, J Phillips, A Brenton, N Strauss, B Lewitt, J Paramore (S Brady 65). Reps (not used): J Ross, M Comb, W Saayman, J Hinkins.

Scorers: Try – Harris; Pens – Hinton (3).

Plymouth Albion: L Arscott; L Robinson, N Saumi, K Fisilau, J Pritchard (J Fabian 16); M Carrington (E Barnes 73), B Shelbourne (N Cane); D Parkes, S Friswell (S Pearl 77), T Paoletti (R Hopkins 73), B Luxton (M Schusterman 65), N Rouse (A Perry 45), A Tooala, D Thompson (capt), D Ward-Smith.

Scorers: Try – Tooala; Pens – Carrington (2); Con – Pritchard.

Just got back from the celebrations down at GR! What a day! Absoloutly exhausted!

Fantastic performance from everyone. A comfortable game - but by god did we make hard work of it. How many times did they get in our half & look like scoring? Not many! We were easily the better team on the day. The whole team did us proud!

Great to see all the players mingling with the fans (at GR) - everyone talking & asking for autographs, photos etc. I think you'll all agree - a perfect day!

Definitely think that game needs to be put onto DVD/video. Could watch it over & over. Would be worth £10 - £15 easily!

This was a great day for Bedford Blues and a day for us all to remember. Rudolf Straeuli has a squad of players that are the best we have had since our premiership days. We now expect this team to win and they normally oblige. Rudi has given us a brilliant season which I am sure is greatly appreciated by us all.

Just got back from Twickenham-unbelievably exciting but definitely the correct result-we were the better side.Giving them a 7 point start wasn't a good idea - it appeared to stem from an intercepted pass close to the scrum and at 0-10 it was looking distinctly unpromising. The pack gradually took control and the backs seemed to enjoy the open spaces - any chance of widening Goldington Road? The second half was one way traffic but to be fair Plymouth defended very well indeed. Splendid try and great penalty to slip into the lead-we then had several chances to get out of sight, couldn't take them and finished the match defending desperately ourselves after Plymouth ran it from their own line and got within five yards of ours before knocking on.
Agree with comments re Ali,and all the backs were terrific. The front five showed why I and I'm sure lots of you think they are as good as any in the division-and better than most. I have to say though that once again the flankers Ben Lewitt and Nic Strauss were for me simply outstanding.
Great day out!

What a day as Bedford Blues walked away with the Powergen Challenge Shield at Twickenham after an incredible and nailbiting 14 - 13 victory over Plymouth Albion. A stunned Blues reacted well after conceding a try within 2 minutes of the off and going in at the break 13 - 6 adrift. But they held their nerve as a Mark Harris try reduced the deficit to 13 - 11. Leigh Hinton had us on the edge of our seats as he slotted home the all important penalty to send over 4000 Blues supporters into orbit. A well deserved victory for Bedford Blues and also for Leeds Tykes who more than deserved their victory over Bath to lift the Powergen Cup 20 -12. A day to remember for sure.

And Spencer Brown...

His tackle on their big mutant winger in the dying seconds is what it is all about. Imagine the scene - he's 6'4", 17 stones and can pegg it like Lomu. Spencer barely on the field five minutes sees that this giant has shrugged of the attentions of two Blues and has just reached fifth gear down the touchline. He will go the full distance but Spencer is having none of it. And kids you need to get dad to read this out to you so that you know how to tackle. Measuring up his angles and knowing he'll get one shot, Brown launches himself at the softer part of the leg just above the knee with such force the Plymouth winger looks as though he has been shot. The attacked stopped the match won. Best moment of the match.

Harris - safe all arvo, great line for the try
Staten - Stuttered occassionally but was awesome in defense
Hinton - redeemed himself with an awesome kick to win the game, ran well
Allen - Rock like performance, solid as they come
Moir - powerful game again, made the try for Harris
Hepher - possibly his most controlled and controlling game for the Blues
Vass - Never stopped, awesome
Paramore - subbed with 20 to go because he had given everything, superb
Lewitt - cemented his place as the best No.7 in the league, put Thomas in the shade
Strauss - So quick round the park, another impressive showing
Brenton - My player of the season, consistently brilliant
Phillips - Clever, experienced, inspirational, so glad he's with us not against us
Brooks - Carried well in the loose, kept the big pack at bay
Johnson - Also carried well, led the team superbly on the day
Volland - Club captain, exemplary performance, scrummaged brilliantly

Tonga' - Great hands, great yard maker, great impact
Brady - Showed what a great player he has become, made a difference replacing Paramore

Excitement, skill and nerve. Congratulations to all concerned with the Bedford Blues.
There must have been at least 8000 at Twickenham supporting the Blues and wearing the colours. Not much Red, white and green.
When is the open topped bus going through Bedford with the team and the cup? Come on Mr.Branston, arrange it. And if Paula wins the London Marathon tomorrow, she can join them.

YEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!! Well done the Blues - maybe not the greatest performance ever but gutsy, determined - particularly in the second half - and a fantastic result in the face of some distinctly dodgy refereeing! Its a long way from that cold night in the main stand, when we saved the club, to the North Stand at Twickenham - but what a journey. Thank you Bedford, thank you.

Early report below from BBC, I'm sure there must have been more to it than that.

Bedford edge Plymouth for Shield

A late penalty from Lee Hinton saw Bedford Blues pip fellow National League One side Plymouth 14-13 to win the Powergen Shield at Twickenham.
Albion, who scored a try within two minutes and led 13-6 at half-time, were ahead until the last four minutes.

But Bedford hit back in the second half with a try from Mark Harris, set up by Craig Moir, to narrow the gap to 13-11.

Hinton, who had landed two penalties but also missed two, held his nerve when the chance came to seal victory.

Tonight's match, particularly the second half, was one of the best of the season. The players and coach deserve every congratulation. I'm only sorry that the light was not good enough for a decent crop of photographs, but I will salvage what I can and post them.

Now for Twickenham. I'm envious of Nigel with his official pass, but we are truly lucky to have a sports photographer of his expertise!

Just seen the £3 souvenier programme. A brilliant piece of work. Great bits about how we got there, also a nice bit about how Plymouth got there. Good Neil Roy bit but for me, the best was the page written by Matt Allen.

If I may quote (in the hope that it instills even more to the supporters and players what its about)...

"Final mention must go to John, out most loyal - and vocal supporter... With a smile constantly spread across his face... John epitomises the spirit and passion that permeates through the Club. There is surely no bigger or more fitting stage for the Bedford Grrrr to be performed".

I couldnt agree more.

Just wanted to wish the team and all the supporters all the best for Saturday, I was going to twickers, but unfortunately my first love, Luton Town just gained promotion this week, and I can't miss the celebrations. It was a real dilema, what should I do, I've always watched the hatters and watched the blues when Luton weren't at home. So the crunch was the Blues in a cup final or the hatters promoition party, unfortunately the Hatters came out on top, but I will be wearing my blues shirt at Kenilworth Road, if only the game kicked off an hour earlier, I could have made both games. Nevermind, anyway here's for a double celebratiion in Bedfordshire. UP THE BLUES

ALBION'S HEADS MUST RULE HEARTS AS TWICKENHAM SELECTIONS ARE MADE
Next Story | Previous Story | Back to list

08:52 - 14 April 2005
Graham Dawe insists emotion cannot play a part in team selection for Saturday's Powergen Challenge Shield final against Bedford Blues at Twickenham.

Albion have used 33 players in the cup this season and 30 of those are still at the club and fit for selection.

But only 22 can be involved in the squad on Saturday in what will be Albion's first ever cup final at the home of English rugby.

"We've just got to do what we think is right," said Dawe. "You can't afford to get emotional just because it's a cup final.

"To me it's just another Saturday.

"We know the opposition and we just need to start with the 15 players we think are right for the day and have seven more on the bench who can come on and play a part."

He added: "Selection is an important part of any team sport.

"Selection is like making a cake. It's about putting the right ingredients into the mixture and hopefully coming out with a team to suit the opposition, suit the conditions and your style of play.

"We're fortunate now that you can have seven replacements as well as the 15 starters. You can put them into the mixture as well and then you just try to get the temperature right."

But there are likely to be at least eight disappointed players tonight when the cup final team is announced.

Versatile back Luke Arscott said: "It's going to be very tough on some of the boys.

"It's been tough on a few of them over the last couple of weeks, but that's the way it goes when you've got a lot of good players around."

Lock Nic Rouse, who has forced his way back into Albion's squad in the last month after recovering from a broken ankle, added: "It is a big thing Twickenham, but we have got a big squad. It's a case of waiting and seeing

BLUES AIMING TO CONTINUE GOOD FORM
Next Story | Previous Story | Back to list

12:00 - 14 April 2005
Bedford Blues will go into tomorrow's Powergen Shield final with a squad packed both with experience and confidence after a recent run of impressive results.

In addition, Blues will not be lacking in support at Twickenham tomorrow, as the club claim around 4,500 supporters will make the trip to south-west London.

Some of those fans will remember Bedford's first trip to rugby's headquarters, exactly 30 years ago, when their heroes defeated Rosslyn Park in the final of what has now become the Powergen Cup.

Despite having to wait a long time to book a return trip, Bedford contain players who have more recent memories of appearing at Twickenham.

Among those are hooker Chris Johnson, who skippered Rotherham when they won the Shield final three years ago.

In addition to Johnson, six of the current Blues' squad figured in the Northampton Saints side which won the Heineken Cup in 2000.

Wing Craig Moir, fly-half Ali Hepher, centre Matt Allen, scrum-half Dominic Malone, lock Jon Phillips and prop Matt Stewart all played when Saints claimed a 9-8 victory over Munster.

Another who has played on the hallowed Twickenham turf is Leigh Hinton.

Hinton needs just 31 points to eclipse James Pritchard's points in a season record, which the Albion player set when playing for Bedford in the 2002-3 season.

Although Bedford trail Albion by 17 points in National Division One, their form of late is marginally better than Graham Dawe's side.

Last Saturday's 29-18 victory at Pertemps Bees made it five wins from six matches for the south Midlands outfit. And included in that sequence is a 39-21 success over Albion at Goldington Road at the beginning of the month.

Albion, who sit third in the table - three places higher than Bedford - have won four and lost two in the same period, their other loss (38-23) coming at home to league champions Bristol Shoguns.

But Blues' director of rugby Rudolf Straeuli, who has announced a provisional squad of 25 for tomorrow's showdown, feels that recent league form will have little bearing on the outcome.

He said: "This is a totally different game from that of two weeks ago.

"It's a one-off occasion and that half-point winning margin comes into play again. Winner takes all, that's for certain."

Bedford squad: M Allen (c), S Brady, A Brenton, J Brooks, S Brown, M Comb, M Harris, A Hepher, J Hinkins, L Hinton, C Johnson, B Lewitt D Malone, C Moir, J Paramore, J Phillips, C Rainbow, J Ross, W Saayman, M Staten, M Stewart, N Strauss, S Tonga'uiha, I Vass, M Volland

Neil:

It's normal practice at these finals that you only have to be in the seat on your ticket for the PowerGen Cup Final, i.e. Bath vs Leeds. For the other games you are normally allowed to sit wherever you like and, in fact, the top tiers of each stand are normally closed for the 1st two games.

Look out for the Blues contingents, probably most in the East Lower but a fair few in the West Lower and head for them.

I'm sure that one of the sponsors (MICHAEL R PETERS/TAVISTOCK SOUND & VISION) could help out with making copies of videos/dvds. Or if videos/dvds aren't viable what about a book/magazine with photos from the big day. Shots from behind-the-scenes e.g. dressing room at half time - on the players coach etc, all the fans. I'm sure that wouldn't be too hard to create. It would make money for the club and allow us to capture those memories (especialy if you've had a shandy or 2).

But even if he can’t shake off a lingering shoulder injury, the former England hooker still expects his side to demonstrate just how much talent is flourishing in National League One.

Dawe made eight winning Powergen Cup final appearances for Bath, the last of them nine years ago when they beat Leicester 16-15 in 1996.

The 45-year-old could still feature in Saturday’s Powergen Challenge Shield final against Bedford if he recovers from the knock he sustained at Goldington Road last month.

“It was hurt originally against Penzance and I took another blow against Bedford in the league a couple of weeks ago,” said Dawe, who won the last of his five England caps a decade ago at the 1995 World Cup.

“It’s unlikely I’ll play unless I make a speedy recovery by tomorrow afternoon, but it’s improved quite rapidly over the last 24 hours.

“And it’s not about me, it’s about the team and if the team needs me to be involved.”

As Albion’s director of rugby, Dawe has transformed a side in danger of dropping out of the National Leagues altogether before he became involved in 1999.

Since then, Plymouth been promoted twice and their second season in National One sees them pushing to overtake local rivals Exeter and finish second in the table behind champions Bristol.

This season Exeter have been beaten twice in the league, Bristol in the League and the Shield, leaving Dawe to rue a slow start to the season.

“We’ve had quite a rollercoaster ride,” he said. “We played Rotherham and Birmingham at the beginning of the season and came second, so that put us on the back burner but we had a great run around Christmas and carried on since then.

“There are good players in this division in every team but maybe it’s only the top teams that get noticed. It’s important for us to show how strong this division is in front of an educated audience at Twickenham.”

Albion may have a long term successor for their player-coach in Stewart Friswell, the former Leicester and England Under-21 hooker who has forced his way into the side in the last month.

On the Dawe career scale, 23-year-old Friswell has another two decades of rugby left in him.

Albion also have a Bedford connection in James Pritchard, the goalkicking wing who is threatening to break scoring records this season.

Pritchard left Bedford to pursue his representative career with Canada after setting a club record of 386 points in 2002/03.

Since joining Plymouth last summer, he’s scored another 317 in league and cup, including a spectacular 70 metre solo score that secured a 19-18 win against local rivals Exeter.

“He’s had a very consistent season for us, scored lots of points and some very important tries,” said Dawe.

“You can’t ignore his impact because he’s a prodigious kicker and very quick and powerful.”

I am married and therefore not allowed to go out in midweek (or any other time of the week for that matter). Thus I will be unable to attend tonight's showing.

When will someone put the 1975 final on video/DVD on a limited commercial basis?
I hear the words, "tape" and "burn" quite a lot these days - surely there is the technology?

If there is not the technology to make it worthwhile and I am simply being selfish and ignorant, please accept my apologies.

All of the coaches leaving Goldington Road on Saturday, that's the 2 club ones plus the 20 Followers ones, will be leaving by the main gates out onto Goldington Road. When they return in the evening, they will not re-enter the ground but will pull up at the main gates for off-loading.

The number of coaches and people involved have both been discussed with North Wing Hospital and Police so hopefully we will avoid any issues with either. People turning up in plenty of time for their coach (as outlined by Pete Beard a couple of postings ago) will greatly ease matters.

Also, make sure you have your Twickenham ticket with you when you leave for Goldington Road!

I spoke to the lady (Karen) yesterday who runs the Scrummery Cafe which is inside the ground at Twickenham (East Stand side apparantly). She asked me to let everyone know that she will be open from 0730 on Saturday morning. Apparantly the food is great and the bar will be open when the first man gets there. She prefers if people can book in advance on +44 (0)20 8892 9797. It seats 150 people.

Oh... our coaches are leaving from the Ath... LOADS of car parking there :)

I would have thought the club could have done some sort of parking on the practice pitch as you are limited parking around the ground entry through main gates? Oh well, I guess not.

See you all in the East stand!

Coaches for Twickenham this Saturday:

With 20 Followers’ coaches leaving Goldington Road this Saturday, it has been necessary to fluctuate the departure time of the first 6 coaches.

Coaches 1 to 6 will now be leaving at 8.15 a.m. prompt! (And not 8.30 as previously notified). The next group of coaches (7 to 12) will be leaving at 8.30 a.m. with the remaining coaches (13 to 20) leaving as soon as they are full, but no later than 8.45 a.m. It is stressed that there will be no parking at the ground for passengers.

Please could you arrive early and be checked in by the coach steward. The coaches will be leaving in sequence and will not be able to wait for latecomers. All coaches will be clearly numbered at the front and rear.

Thanks and here's to a great day!

Stephen,

I think your confusion has arisen because the club was not alloted and did not sell purely one block of tickets for the Powergen Cup final between Bath v Leeds at 2.30pm. The club has sold tickets for the West East North and South stands.

If Blues supporters are able to access their alloted seats for our game at 12.00 pm then we will be scattered. In previous years supporters have been able to watch the Shield final from anywhere in the lower tiers. The upper tiers are only openened up for the main game at 2.30pm. Hence trying to organize us all into one group for greatest impact!

Pete
Bedford, UK - Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at 00:15:42 (BST)
I'm a little confused by the comments about Saturday and trying to pull support together inside the ground.

I understand that before the Cup final one can sit anywhere, then one has to move to allocated seat for that event. But as we in the vast majority bought tickets from then club and these, I assume, were sold in blocks why would we want to potentially be scattered around the ground for the game and not all sit together in the seat sold to us by the club?

Surely in sitting in our allocated seats, as at Northampton, we as a group will be able to give the team the most vocal support possable and should be able to create a ''sea'' of blue and white.

Scared about voting for player of the year? Why not go for someone on a 2 year contract then!!!!! Then there is no problem! :)

East Stand is where we are congregating! We have over 30 Under 10's parents and kids going, and I know there are 2 coaches from the Juniors section going!

Dont care if we win or lose, as long its a good game, and Plymouth are on the losing side. Its going to be nervy and tough for both sides not giving an inch. Providing we keep the penalty count down then I think we have a great chance

Just a quick note from an exiled Blues supporter. I will be there on Saturday, only the 2nd time this season I have made it to a game (Bristol, December) (It's quite a trek to GR from here). I have my ticket and my brand new Blues Jersey so I am looking forward to a great day out. I notice that there are Powergen Cup Bedford caps for sale at the club shop. Are you setting up a stall at HQ? If I can get my hands on a cap I may wear it on Sunday (taking part in the London Marathon on Sunday so won't be having beer!). Anyway, probably won't know anybody in the Bedford crowd as it is about 20 yrs since I was a GR regular. Hope to meet some of you there. Come on you Blues!! By the way, could you get the boys to beat Bris next saturday then I can have a bit of a laugh at some of the locals expense.

Come on you Blues

I thought the idea to populate the East stand was to be opposite the tunnel so that as the team ran out there would be a mass of BLUE facing them.

BrianC
Bedford, UK - Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at 16:30:56 (BST)
Jackie, on your posting you mentioned the East Stand-- arent we all populating the lower West stand around the tunnel entrance to greet the boys with a huge wall of noise.
If we are going to get 4500 people around the tunnel entrance we all need to be in situ asap- i suggest we bag our seats an have 'runners' to get the beer in (agree with earlier postings that the Tetleys really is crap) as i am sure our friends from Bath boys will want to follow Mr Dawe..
The last thing we want is to be spread all over the ground-- when we were all together at the B's the noise was awesome....

Quick thanks to Armo for the coaching on Sunday and Mr Dixon for providing the cheerleader---our touch Rugby side is still short of a couple of young quick players due to defection -- training Wednesday, Bedford Park (nr bandstand) at 18:30 for anyone up for the challenge....

Finally have just cast my vote for player of the season-- i did this relunctantly as my choice almost always leaves the club at the end of the season. This year I would dearly like this not to happen so please -- can we do what it takes to keep the outstanding Mr Lewitt at Bedford and not anywhere else (like the Saints)--thats all

theres no league action this week but heard the Blues are in action near Richmond this week, if anyone is going see you there ;)

Fighting talk from West country
SHELBOURNE AIMING TO SET RECORD STRAIGHT AGAINST BLUES AT TWICKENHAM
Next Story | Previous Story | Back to list

10:53 - 12 April 2005
Scrum-half Bryan Shelbourne feels Plymouth Albion will have something to prove on Saturday when they take on Bedford Blues in the Powergen Challenge Shield final at Twickenham.

Albion lost 39-21 to the Blues in National Division One 10 days ago. It was Albion's biggest defeat of the season.

"We're thinking about Twickenham now," said Shelbourne, who helped Albion claim a 37-25 win over Henley on Saturday.

"It's a big day for the club and a big day for the team, especially after last week.

"We've got something to prove. We were upset after last week's performance at Bedford."

Shelbourne went to college just up the road from Twickenham and played there in a BUSA final and for England Students.

"That area's my second home," said Shelbourne. "I know a lot of people from Twickenham, but it seems like some of the boys here have played at Twickenham more than me with Devon. It seems they know it better than I do.

"Hopefully, that will help us deal with the occasion.

"I don't think anyone's going to be out of their depth.

"We know what the opposition are going to offer.

"They played well against us last week, but we know we've got a lot more in the tank. I think we can compete a lot better than last week.

"We'll see what they come with, but we'll definitely be coming up with a lot more than we did up there.

"In cup finals it all comes down to the day.

"It'll be a tough game, a very tough game, but it will be a good day, though. I've heard we've got 20 (fans') buses going, which is incredible."

Shelbourne finds himself on the brink of playing at Twickenham for Albion less than five months after joining the club.

His first appearance for the club came as a late replacement in Albion's Powergen Cup sixth round clash with Sale.

The former Gwent Dragons scrum-half then earned his first league start in January and made his first cup start in the Powergen Shield semi-final against Bristol last month.

"To get a day out at Twickenham after only been here for six months, not even that, is fantastic," he said. "To be honest, I'll relish it - if selected."

Although Albion can no longer win the Division One title, Shelbourne insists the team what to finish on a high by winning at Twickenham and then their final two league games.

Albion could still finish second if they win both their remaining games against Otley and London Welsh, respectively, and Exeter slip up against either Pertemps Bees or Rotherham.

"We've got one week to concentrate on Twickenham," said Shelbourne. "And then after that we've got two more league games.

"We'll be just trying to get five points from both those games. That's how I look at it.

"It's not just to go up to Otley and winning, it's about winning well. And when London Welsh come here we also want to win well. There's only two games left and we've got nothing to lose. We might as well just put everything into it."

Supporters are reminded that Albion Travel Club coaches will be leaving Milehouse park and ride car park (Home Park) at 5.30am on Saturday morning. At the moment there are 20 coaches picking up there and they will depart as soon as they are filled.

Jason - according to the Charles Wells website they don't have any pubs of their own near Twickers - none listed for Middlesex and just 3 in London, though I'm sure there'd be some somewhere with Charlie Wells as a guest. Last season when going down for the L-Welsh game the pub on Kew station had Bombardier straight out of the barrel!
If you're not on the Followers coaches you're best bet for post-match beer is to get a free Rugby Bus back to Richmond - plenty of decent Youngs and Fullers' pubs there. Lets hope it's celebratory.

In answer to a couple of queries, I have checked my Twickenham info and found that canisters are among the banned items. I assume therefore that airhorns are not permitted in the stadium.
The other items are "cans, bottles, containers, glasses and fireworks. Bottles means any bottleshaped container made of glass." I have never had a plastic bottle of water removed and I have seen many people with hot drinks flasks.
The lower East stand entrances are numbers in the 30s. I believe that lots of us will be watching our match in this area before moving off to allocated seats.

Great stuff Blues and Rudi, ideal build up for next week, can't wait to see THE team at Twickers again, having seen them in the "30 years ago game" as a spotty teenager. The then John Player Cup had such a profile that HQ catered accordingly and promptly ran out of beer!!!. HIGHLIGHTS

A good win for Blues in an entertaining and well played game. Not our regular starting line up, with Hinkins at full back for Hinton, and newcomer Geoff Griffiths on the left wing, Joe Ross at hooker, Marc Comb in the second row, Chris Rainbow back at 7. An impressive bench too; Johnson, Soane, Brooks, Vass, Paramore, Brown and Lewitt.

Ali Hepher took and succeeded with all the kicks, notching up 19 points and collecting the MOM award and bottle. He opened with an early penalty but it was Bees with the first try starting from a lineout, some Blues indecision a missed tackle and Knight was through for the try, well converted by Walsh. Several good Blues plays went unrewarded but finally it was Spencer Brown, who had come on for the injured Craig Moir, who took a wide pass from Hepher to score on the right wing, and Ali kicked the difficult conversion well. Bees drew level before half time with another penalty well kicked from wide out by Walsh who judged the wind perfectly.

The half time score was a fair reflection of a closely fought contest. If anything Bees had had the better of the territory, possession was about equal and both sides had handled and tackled well. The second half started like the first with a Hepher penalty followed by a Knight try. Hepher regained the lead for Blues with another penalty and we were well into the last quarter before James Hinkins ran in from halfway. Bees had infringed at their own lineout and Vass took a tap penalty to put them on the back foot. Two quick passes to the left and Hinks was away to sprint under the posts.

Ali Hepher extended the lead with a final injury time penalty. A good run out in the second half for the bench, and hopefully plenty of confidence for next week.

Good result at SXR today, A good performance from some of the "fringe" players - Hinko's break-away try was the match winner.

Good to see Spencer back in the mix at Goldington Road. A league double against Birmingham today would be a nice prelude before the Powergen Shield Final at Twickenham. Come on you Blues, do the business against the Bees and warm the hearts of so many people.

Thanks for all the info guys and gals. Cheers for the email Kirsty, it did work!
I have checked times already, and yes Mike, I seem to remember going overland before to Twickers for an England International - much simpler.
What I was really wondering is what time to catch a train from Bedford to be crammed in like sardines with fellow Blues eccentrics, eclectics and nutters?!! Catch the wrong one and I could be spending a long time with dribbling weirdos instead......

I went West Hampstead with Adam and a couple of others for Eng/Scot. We got half way round and the driver got off and we waited 20 mins for another to come along to finish the journey :(

If you can get your timings right then yes, its a good choice tho.

Word of advice for those of you travelling Thameslink... if you get off at West Hampstead you can catch an overland train to Richmond and then the rugby special to Twickenham. Much quicker and you avoid central London.

Richard, i like several others will stroll to Bedford train station for 8.30ish train ( Murphy taxis ex Thurleigh i hope ) , get ripped off for over priced ticket, endure train and tube to arrive in pub near HQ for 10.30 ish and have several sharpeners and trundle to ground. get thoroughly entertained by Blues whooping West country weasels and Alicebands, have a couple more sharpeners then endure a dower cup final in which Bath beat Leeds 5-3, get train home after a several more sharpeners and no doubt fall asleep on train ( sharpness gone) , directly over the heater and wake up in sidings in Bedford.
Can't wait.

Is there any general consensus on train times leaving next Saturday from Bedford? I could go from M Keynes station, but thought there would be a bit more atmos if leaving from Bedford. I know that really I should be on the Followers coach, but its a bit expensive for 5 of us, as well as restrictive for timing with 3 girls prone to fits of boredom!
Sorry I can't be at Birmingham tomorrow, but not being a 'true supporter' I'm sure the team will fully understand.

Looks interesting with half of last weeks team rested for 'The Big Final'.Still I think that The Blues can beat The Bees tomorrow. Lets make this the 3rd match against them when The Blues have come out Victorious!!!
Talking of the final, I was looking through my rugby world, and there was an advert for the Powergen Final, on there was the list of games taking place and the time. I still can't quite believe that we are going to Twickenham. I pointed out to a friend thats the team that you tell me im obessessed by! Oh well what if I am! Seeing as I wasnt even born when the Blues last reached the final and won I can't wait to say in another 30 years time... I was there to see The Blues!!!

If there is still anyone out there who has not booked a seat on a coach to Twickenham and wishes to do so, please contact Margaret Appleton (01234 354708) as a matter of urgency. No more bookings can be taken after the weekend and no places are confirmed now without payment. There are still a few people who have not paid for their provisional booking. We are booking on our 20th coach now!!
Members will be receiving information about the End of Season Ball. If you have already completed a booking form and given it in please do not send another. Also I look forward to receiving members' votes for the Player of the Season. It could be a close-run thing this year.

Shaun's black eye wasn't from scoring that try. It was a 'present' from a well known Plymouth hooker who's getting on in years!

Nigel's all action pictures are very much appreciated especially the action pictures of the Leigh Hinton and Shaun Brady tries against Plymouth Albion.
The pictures of the Brady try shows the Plymouth number 7 diving on top of Shaun knocking his head guard from his head. Afterwards when Shaun left the field I noticed he had won a black eye for his efforts!!

The report from Plymouth seems to be a very fair reflection of the game on Saturday - nice to see that as opposed to the normal, very unlucky deserved a victory etc etc etc.

I didn't get a good view of Leigh's try as I way on my way back to the bar still I suppose I can watch the Video this thursday.

Lets just hope we keep the winning run going for another two weeks - it would be great to go to Birmingham again and come away with a victory - always nice to leave there after a win and then follow this with the big one.

One of the most exciting games I have seen in the 25 years I have been a 'true supporter.' Well done to all concerned. Everyone played their part to a level of 110%.
If you look at the stats, Plymouth only had 8 line-outs which means we didn't play to their strengths of the many man maul, by kicking from hand to gain ground. Obviously, Rudi and his team have done their homework. And although I am not a great fan of the rolling maul, I have to say to see our 8 up front push the Plymouth 8 back at least 30 metres on 2 occassions was magnificent. However, the 16th.of April is another day and Plymouth might be a different team, but I am sure all our players and management are aware of that.
Only one slight concern to me and I am sure the video will be analysed, is that on 2 occassions the ball came out of the ruck and there was no scrum half to gather the ball and we lost the advantage.
Well done and I have my flag and my car sticker proudly on display.

I was treated on Saturday, watching two fantastic matches from two Blues teams, both winning ones at that!
The 2nds had a great game against London welsh, played some great rugby and won! Sorry I sacrificed selling jackpot tickets for another rugby match!!!
Then the first XV- wow, that was great! It looked fantastic walking in with about 10 minutes till kick off to see so many people in the ground, waving their flags, wearing the hats, really up for the match! We all knew it would probably be the battle of the kickers, and didn’t Leigh do well!
I’m not going to single out percific players though, every player played their part and it was such a great match. Roll on Twickenham, and COME ON U BLUES!!!!!!!!!

P.S Sorry for no match reports for some time, I have been busy with coursework, although I think we are all treated with Chris Wards fantasic reports, along with Mike Greens in the paper and Neil Roys on 3 counties. Another one would just be to much!!!

Well done blues a truely memorable performance which I hope we can replicate all the way to the final whistle at Twickenham. I thought overall the backs were outstanding today and I agree with all that Saayman did have his best game in a blues shirt but surely his name should be WELDED ON! Fortunately quick ball and thinking by Lewit and a good interchange by Vass and Staten led to a try which had moments earlier had been completely butchered when Saayman hung on to a 3 on 1 with Hinks and Staten outside with a clear run to the line.

Apart from that I thoroughly enjoyed the game and has a fan of back play and running rugby I was especially pleased to see the likes of Staten and Harris with some space to show their great footwork and pace, I do like the new set up in the backs it looks very dangerous in open play. I also thought the skill level of the bedford players was a notch higher than previously with some great passes out of the tackle and great interchanging between backs and forwards!!!!!

Another pleasing aspect was the temprement of some of the old heads in the side for me it bodes well that in games like yesterday and Exeter and Birmingham in the cup that these players really do up their games it seems the tougher the pressure the better they play which can only be a good thing with our run in to the end of the season!!!!

Well done blues, and one last thing any one in contact with Pritchard please take him somewhere sit him down and have a quiet word about his ridiculous hair band (it is for his own good)

BREAKFAST WITH THE LIONS - AND LIONS LEGENDS!
Come and watch the British & Irish Lions v New Zealand test series on Big Screens at Murrayfield in the company of some of Scotland's greatest Lions legends. Eat a full British breakfast, watch the game, have a drink and listen to the likes of Jim Telfer, Alan Tait and Kenny Milne give their opinions on the game, and speak about their own Lions experiences. A brilliant way to watch the Lions - not to be missed!

Saturdays: 25th June, 2nd July, 9th July
Only £15 per person per match - or £30 for all three tests

You'll have to go up north for the breakfast if you want to take advantage of this offer, but I thought that the club might use the idea to bring in a little out-of-season revenue. I don't know of any ex-Lions in Bedford but maybe there are others who could provide a little prematch speech.

Great reports about yesterday's game. Let's hope London Welsh can win today so our table position is maintained.

Totally agree with “Tich the Chick” and “Brian C” for the moment we must concentrate the run up to Twickenham, so the discussion on what or who makes a ‘true supporter’ should cease, at least for now.

Both the games yesterday sounded great, Radio Three Counties coverage of the Plymouth was excellent and my customers are now used to having to wait for the end Neil Roy’s updates.

I am now looking forward to seeing the game on Tuesday in the members bar will Bernie be there to claim his pint?

Given the opposition, yesterday's performance really showed what this team is capable of, and was probably the most complete 80 minutes we've produced all season. You could tell how pleased the players were at the end. Some interesting tactical differences too, with very little kicking out of hand and Ali Hepher occasionally popping up as scrum-half at the breakdown.

Well done all, keep it up !

HIGHLIGHTS – Loads !!

A thoroughly entertaining game and one of our best displays this campaign. Last week at Nottingham was so different! Albeit in completely different conditions with sunshine and barely a breath of wind, this week was the epitome of ball in hand play as evidenced by the fact that in the first half Albion had only two lineouts, both from their own touch kicks from penalties. So we did not put the ball off the park once in 40 minutes and in the second half, playing up the slope Plymouth had just 6 lineouts, 2 from their own penalties.

Leigh Hinton was once again prolific with the boot and scored an excellent try as well, collecting 26 points today to take him past 350 for the season of which 315 are league points. The record for our league, held by our own James Pritchard at 374, now looks, barring injury, in jeopardy. And injury was uncomfortably close today with Leigh being clobbered with a high tackle after only 4 minutes. He looked groggy but recovered and the offender Fisilau was yellow carded.

The opening scoring chance came to Plymouth after we came in from the side at a ruck and up stepped James Pritchard. When he was a Blues player and about to kick I would write in the result in my notes and rarely have to cross it out. Today I tried the same and it worked for us as unusually he missed a straightforward chance from 32 metres in front. So Leigh opened the scoring with a penalty on the 22 and moments later Pritchard responded well from half way. The penalty exchanges continued, but Blues always looked more threatening and had by far the best of territory and possession.

Albions best scoring opportunity in the first half was only avoided by a foot in touch on the right wing. And this breakaway had come from a muddle of a pass on halfway when we looked set to attack well ourselves. Those errors can be costly but this time the gods were on our side. Hinton’s next penalty was well taken from the 10 metre line and sailed over. Pritchard balanced it up again. Plymouth attacked with Fisilau kicking ahead and forcing a scrum with their put in 5 metres out. Their rolling maul from that worked well but they were penalised for crossing as they moved the ball away. Hinton put us ahead as Plymouth was offside at a scrum 30 metres out, but Albion had a chance to get back when we were penalised for not rolling away.

They kicked for touch to half way but we stole the line out and Junior Paramore's charge got us 30 metres down field as he jinked and handed off all and sundry. Great stuff! From the breakdown quick ball left then back right to Hinton. He checked and glided away off his right foot with 15 metres to go. The dash – the half tackle – the dive and the outstretched hand planting the ball right between the posts. Fabulous, and a ten point lead at half time.

A touching moment at half time as Peter Smith presented a signed match ball to Richard Barnes, father of Ed Barnes playing at 10 for Plymouth whose mother Avril died last autumn.

James Pritchard reduced the lead to seven in the opening minute of the second half after a shaky start as we dropped the restart kick. But Blues came back well to get a scrum 5 metres out. That was reset but Plymouth were offside as the scrum broke up and Hinton restored the lead to ten. A 20 minute spell of Blues pressure with another Paramore flourish and a penalty from Hinton from wide out right that was just short
But the next from just inside the Plymouth half was perfect and Blues were beginning to look comfortable 13 points ahead, all 22 from Hinton who passed 350 for the season in League and Cup.

Then a classic Albion error as a pass was dropped on half way and Blues hoofed it up field and Shaun Brady on only moments before showed his skills with a kick and chase and touchdown in the right hand corner and another brilliant kick from Hinton.
Plymouth were not finished yet and good work from their forwards set up ex Blue Ed Barnes for a good try on the left, Pritchard converting. (29/16).

Then the biggest cheer of the afternoon as Ian Vass, now at fly half to Malone’s 9, dropped back from a ruck in midfield. Malone’s pass was perfect and Vass’s left foot let rip for one of the longest drop goals seen at GR for a long time. Sam Roberts announced this to the Plymouth fans still in Plymouth, such was his enthusiasm. (If you do that on the Twickenham PA Sam they will hear it!) But Plymouth weren’t finished yet and Tooala ran through for a well made try as we went into injury time. But it was Vass again who was to have the last word. Soane made the break and found Weldon Saayman, tall and strong for a centre, who committed three Albion defenders and Mike Staten took the pass going left, As he got close to touch he neatly flicked inside to Vass on the 22 and he was in for the final score, well converted again.

An entertaining romp, good hands and quick ball a lot of the time. Credit to everybody and I imagine 1916 satisfied spectators. This was not Plymouth's strongest side, their prolific Dan Ward-Smith in particular absent from the No 8 spot. But we should be encouraged by this, especially not allowing Albion to play their trademark forward game. A good win away next week against Birmingham will put us in fine fettle for the big day out.

Be there!!

Well I suppose I must now be considered a 'true supporter' as I was at Russell Park this afternoon to witness an extremely ordinary London Welsh side make a game of it against a Bedford 2nd XV that should have been 20 points clear at half time. Not what I'd consider a "good entertaining game." Still it was " a nice warm up for the game at Goldington Road".
What a great game the main event was though, the "glory supporters" would have been well satisfied. I was a little worried when we failed to capitalise on the man advantage early in the first half, but that aside, what a great TEAM performance. The first up tackling was the best I've seen since the Exeter Cup match; Saayman and Harris both came of age in a Blues shirt; a vintage Junior rampage leading to the first try, and as for Vass' drop goal from inside his own half - priceless. Worth double for the demoralising effect it had on Plymouth - you could almost hear the entire Plymouth team mouth 'bugger it' in unison under their breath as it sailed over.
Having heard so much about Plymouths 15 man maul, and not witnessed it today, I'm just a little worried that they've not shown us their full hand, I hope todays superb victory doesn't lull us into complacency for the Final.
Oh, and much as I still rate Pritchard as a player - didn't he look a ponce with his Alice band?

I agree with you Robert C re the quality of the game and of Saayman's contribution. In my view Junior has, over the past 3 or 4 games, recaptured the quality of play that made him so effective in his previous life in a Blues jersey. Incidentally I think the last team performance of that quality was our away win at Otley.
According to Neil Roy, Leigh needs 31 more points to break Pritch's record. It would be fantastic if he were to do that at Twickenham.

It was good to meet up with the Plymouth supporters who had come by coach to today's match. Unlike The Followers they made it a day trip. An interesting comment was that they were pleased to be playing us in the Shield Final. Other than neighbours Penzance, we are the club they like to visit best and have to visit them. I gather from Graham Dawe, no less, that we have sold more tickets for Twickenham than they have and have more coaches going. Let's make them know it by our volume on the day!

The Followers Jackpot was able to pay out 4 cash prizes plus the Michael R Peters Prize. The winners of the cash were Nos Thomas, Terry Stark and Gary Chandler with the fourth prize of £35 on ticket number 29594 unclaimed. Lynne Bedford won the Peters Prize.

Sorry I couldn't get to watch the 2nds but as we start selling Jackpot tickets at 2pm it would have been impossible. Glad to hear the result though. Well done lads!

Congratulations to Rudolf Straeuli and the Bedford team for a brilliant performance in thrashing Plymouth 39-21. This was the best team performance I have seen for a long time. All the players excelled and the game plan worked so well.
All the supporters nearby in the stand were ecstatic including a family of four on their first visit to the ground.
Our centre Saayman had his best game ever and Leigh Hinton and Ian Vass thoroughly deserved their joint MOM. Leigh Hinton has now scored over 350 points this season and the drop goal from Ian Vass was classic.

A great win although I was shocked at the attack on Skippy. Handbagging is one thing, kicking someones face after a minor spat is nothing short of thuggery. I trust the management will study the video and take appropriate action.

What a game. Fantastic handling, great tackling, and a superb offload by Junior to lead to that first try. Superb, Bedford - well done to all. I was very pleased particularly that the passing was in the bread basket.

What a game and a half at Goldington Road as Bedford Blues turned in an exceptional team performance to overcome a below par Plymouth Albion 39 -21. Leigh Hinton in the wars in the first 5 minutes but scoring an incredible try before the break that brought the house down, after a Junior Paramore lineout interception. Bedford kept the pressure on Plymouth after the break with further tries and an Ian Vaas drop goal to secure a memorable victory. Perhaps the best game I have witnessed all season. Bring on that Twickenham final. Well you Blues!

All players played their best and that drop goal from Ian Vass where did that come from, that was brilliant. Congratulations to Leigh Hinton and Ian Vass for man of the match as well, they throughly deserved it.
