Just returned from a week in Spain. Watched the Lions matches in a Welsh Bar!!! One of only 3 females present and the other 2 looked as though they had been dragged along unwillingly.
Catching up on news, I'm sad that Ben is going but wish him all the best and echo what everone else has said about him.
Very sad to hear of Vic Storrow's death. He was a lovely man who, like most people, had a view on the quality of Jackpot tickets that I sold him. It was always a pleasure to be insulted by a gentleman of his stature in the club and the town.

Thanks Kirsty - I have been searching via google and saw from one of the websites http://www.everestnews.com that they have packed up the basecamp after a difficult season weatherwise, so I was wondering if JP and Co. had had to turn back. Its good to hear they made it -maybe JP will read the board later and let us know how they got on.

Hi. Great win for the Lions on saturday. Shame about Lawrence's ankle. You could see it was bad the moment he went down, poor b******.
On a brighter note, met up with Pete and Ronnie Beard after the game as well as Kramer Ronaki and together we all shared a few Bedford Blues moments. If I can work out how to dp it I'll upload some photos, or more likely forward them to one of the clever people who uses the site to ask them to do it for me.
Should be catching up with them again next week for the NZ Maori game in Hamilton.
Sorry to hear about Ben but I'd echo all those compliment paid to him. He's been a great servant to everyone who follows the Blues.
Cheers

Christy - there was a brief mention and interview with JP on Chiltern Radio this morning.
I think they were setting off for base camp today but I don't know how long it's expected to take. Maybe give Chiltern a call to see if they will be having regular updates, or better still get Kirsty on the case - she's the expert at badgering the media for more Blues coverage. :)

You are the nicest, politest, and friendliest face at, and have been in my time going, at Goldington Road. You always have time for anyone who comes to talk to you, no matter how young or old with a permanent grin on your face.

Good luck.

All the rugby talk is about Dallaglio's ankle but a more important leg injury for Blues fans is Ben Whetstone's Achilles tendon. BOS reports that it's forced him to call it a day. Can't say it's a great shock, but nonetheless it's still sad to have it confirmed.

Hi to you all from a cold wet Rotorua. It could be worse, it's snowing in Wellington.
It's Friday evening ahead of the first lions match against Bay of Plenty. The Blues Brothers (and Sister!) have travelled south for the game, there'll be one small corner of the Rotorua International Stadium forever blue, with our trusty hat's, glasses and club flag.
Thank you to all followers and friends for a wonderfull wedding day at the club last Saturday. A Lions win tomorrow would start the honeymoon off just grand. The word down here is a 3 - 0 whitewash by the All Blacks!

Well done Kirsty for your efforts. You've certainly got my support.
There are a some Blues fans coming out here for the Lions Tour and am hoping to meet up with them. It was great down the VIaduct at the weekend as the boys were wandering back from a traing session at the Les Mills Gym. Very friendly welcome from the bystanders and the lads including Jonny Wilkinson reciprocated by signing autographs and posing for photos. Great atmosphere. Looking forward to the first match on Saturday down at Rotorua. I shall be there with my partner. Unfortunately she'll be supporting BoP.
Incidentally, I faxed off an order from some Blues Merchandise to the shop a couple of weeks ago but haven't treceived a response. Does anyone know if there's an e-mail contact? I was hoping to get one or two bits and pieces from the Cup run.

The room will be open from 07:00 and the match screened from 07:30. The bar will NOT be open.
After the match, everyone present will be expected to put in about 3 hours of time on the ground with weeding the top car park and preparing the front fence for painting being the two main targets this week.

There has been a new revelation regarding the grass growing at Goldington Road, our investigative reporter has discovered that it is new grass for the coming season, specially imported from Wales it is the Green Green Grass of home, not the type used in the Millenium Stadium but a more common variety, at least when questioned we were told It's not unusual.Hopefully Delilah will keep her hands of Nic Strauss hair for next season. It is hoped that the combination of new coach, new grass and Bedford away kit will make the players believe they are Welsh and can therefore beat everybody. That should please the president.

Article in my local free rag about ex-Blues player CHRIS BAJAK who now struts his stuff for Letchworth RFC and is also a teacher at Hitchin Boys School. It says that we was in-contention for a Twickenham place for his team who'd made the final of the county cup. Unfortunately Bajak's father is ill in the USA and he is flying out on the day of the final. It seems that Bajak has missed finals before having done pre-season with Dunstablians when they made the journey to HQ and also with Bedford Ath and Luton RFC when they made Twickenham finals. I think Bajak unfarely got some harsh criticsm about his ball handling whilst at the Blues - i think he was no worse or no better than that team at the time, or even some of our present players. Since leaving the Blues Bajak had a stellar season at Luton scoring nearly 50 tries !

During yesterdays and todays exceptionally hot weather, some of the grass at Goldington Road was in danger of not growing as much as it should. Thanks to the quick thinking of the operations manager and the involvment of The Fire Brigade, International Rescue, Donkey Mon, Melon Titchmarsh and Curly Pillock (all well repected t.v. horticulturalists) the at risk blades were succesfully saved.Further bulletins on the endangered grass will follow as available.Meanwhile the wind is still stirring the flags on both the stand and the main flagpole. It is predicted that following the grass life cycle an outbreak of rugby may follow, although there is no statistical evidence to support this but historically this has been the norm.

Well Uncle Tim B, the old Viagra subscription must be working if you are hoping to keep it up until the 1st August !!!
For my holiday Daddy wants to take the caravan to Frrance in September, but mommy doesn't like boats, travelling, the French, camping, cold weather, hot weather, mosquitoes, cooking, etc...so we will have to see.
Oh and remember kids and old folks ( Tim B and Switch ) wear a hat and plenty of sun cream in the hot weather and drink plenty of liquid ( not beer ).
Well i'm off to play group now, I only hope those nasty girls haven't got the ride on tractor with digging scope attachment.
P.S. daddy has got a lawn mower, but it doesnt work very well as he keeps saying the sodding thing is as much use as the mother in laws' broom stick. ( Not sure what he means )

For those of you with withdrawal symptoms, and I'm guessing there is a few of you - have you thought about coming down to watch the touch rugby on a Wednesday night?
One or two Blues legends pulling on their boots in anger - Albert Finney, Mark Howe, Paul Alston and one or two current Goldington Road employees can also be seen - Junior, Chris Rainbow, Sacha, Gray Twins, Karl Dickson, James Hinkins. The Blues Academy, the Ath, Queens and Swifts have representatives playing as well and the schools also contribute some very good teams. The standard is really excellent, the game is very fast and involving and there is always an opinion to be shouted in the direction of the referee.
If you've never been see if you can make it down next Wednesday and watch the action unfold at the Polhill Campus. First rounds kick off at 7pm.

Actually there has been quite a lot of information given to us. We know the provisional fixture list, we know that Mike Rayer is coming shortly, and no doubt we will have full information in due course about the Sevens.
Nick Randall's updates have been brilliant over this year, and I hope he is enjoying a much-deserved break. I am sure that details of the new squad will be provided in due course. Let's trust the club to do its best for us all, and leave it at that; it is going to be rather depressing if we are to be treated to constant demands for information, when the season is still a few months away!

I understand that new recuits wiil take time and Straeuli is away and Rayer is not here yet. But what about people that are leaving?
Apart from the news of Hinton/Lewitt/Vass are there no players leaving, retiring or not having their contract renewed? Surely we are not keeping them all?
In previous seasons, these sorts of decisions and anouncements were made in the week after the end of the season before the players left for the summer. I presume thay have all gone now but we don't know who is coming back.

Pray tell us Robert C, if we don't leave it to those aforementioned people who will sort things out? How many players have supporters signed for the club? Like Tim says leave to those who know what they are doing and have the full picture. The future of the club should not be placed in the hands of people who just make random postings about subjects of which they have only a passing knowledge, especially if same people cannot even remember their own full names.

There is a saying in companies that when the phones stop ringing you are probably going out of business.
The day the Blues supporters have no views or interest in the club or the players and are resigned to leaving things to the "people who have more knowledge and experience" then it will be a bad day for Bedford Blues.

Thank you Optician, you'll never make a GCSE examiner, concentrate on the content don't bother about the spelling.Nice to see that people are more concerned about BoS typos than the actual content of the article, hopefully we still have Dom Malone and Karl Dixon, Vass leaving, like much else is still a matter of rumour along side Jonny Wilkinson and Lawrence Dallaligio coming on 12 month contracts.Like that nice Mrs Markham said in an earlier posting, lets wait until September and see who runs out in a Bedford shirt. Players comongs and goings have been speculated about every close season since Moses ran out for the Israelites first away game in rather wet conditions.

TWICKENHAM BOUND AGAIN and RAYER MAKES NEW SCRUM HALF A PRIORITY. Still don't understand the comment about rugby and gentlemen. Has somebody acted in an ungentlmanly way? If so who?
Bernie McGee
UK - Monday, May 23, 2005 at 17:58:24 (BST)
No mention of Dom Malone in BOS and hopefully he will be retained by the club. He played numerous games at scrum half last season and played very well.
The club's declared policy of developing local players is understandable and any player reaching LD1 standard should be given a chance on the bench.
The final game against Coventry included 8 or 9 fringe players in the first team squad and the response from Rudi after the game was that they would have to play better than that to play regularly in LD1.
It goes without saying that it does not matter where the players come from provided they are good enough.

A little boy about 8 years old goes into sports shop to buy a new England rugby ball he has seen in the window. Anyway he doesn’t know how much it is so he asks the shop assistant behind the counter. The assistant says, “its £25 matey.”
The little boy replies, “I have only got £5 pocket money”, so the assistant says “sorry but you will have to save up then.”
So the boy thinks and says to the assistant “I will do you a deal. Blind fold me and pick any ball off that shelf and I bet I can guess what team is on the ball. If I get it right you have to give me the England ball.”
So the assistant thinks go on then he is only young. So he blind folds the little lad and he gets the ball off the shelf, puts it in front of the boys face and the boy shouts, “its Gloucester!” The assistant in shock says, “How did you know that?”
The boy says, “I could hear the sound of the shed and feel the emotions of the Kingsholme faithful.” So the assistant says “Wow. Ok matey, let’s have another go.”
So he gets a ball from the shelf puts it in front of the boys face. The boy shouts “it’s Leicester!”
The assistant says, “Wow, how did you get that?” The boy says, “I could hear roar of the Tigers.”
The assistant in total shock says, “Right, get this one and you can have the ball and the Beckham boots.” So he gets the ball puts it in front of the boys face. The boy shouts “its Quins.”
“ How did you get that one?” says the assistant.
The boy says, “Well, it’s going down.”

"Vass wants to be a full-time professional"
The chairman and directors should do everything possible to keep him at the club as a full -time player.
In addition the management need to be aware the supporters have had an excellent 2004/5 season and have every right to expect the 2005/6 season to be as good if not better.
Hopefully Mike Rayer will get the financial support from the chairman to recruit quality players to replace Lewitt, Hinton and Vass (if he goes).
I would have thought a goal kicker was a priority requirement now that Leigh Hinton has left the club in addition to Mike Rayer's number one priority to recruit a scrum half as mentioned in BOS.

Some really exciting players there, I would recommend people going to watch them if you javen't seen them play already.

The BoS reports Mike Rayer is resigned to losing Vass. If it's a case of Ian wanting to play at a higher level then fair enough, if it's just "Vass wants to be a full-time professional" then couldn't something could be sorted out with local companies/sponsorship etc?
What about putting 5 pence on the price of beer to keep Vass here!

It's not as if Mike has never coached a Rugby squad before he knows what his plans are for next season, maybe even the next three seasons, and who to contact if need be about current Bedford players. And anyway Mike’s probably already spoken to Rudi and the other coaches about the players, who know...........................

Found this on bbc sport
Rayer quits Cardiff for Bedford
Mike Rayer has agreed a three-year deal with Bedford
Mike Rayer will leave his role as Cardiff coach to join English National League One club Bedford Blues as director of rugby on a three-year deal.
The former Wales international spent two seasons as a player at Goldington Road between 1996 and 1998.
"The offer came out of the blue, but it was one that I knew that I had to seriously consider," Rayer said.
"Obviously it's a wrench to leave the Arms Park, but I have to consider job security for myself and my family."
Rayer will again link up with former Cardiff Blues centre Matt Allen, who joined Bedford last season and captained Bedford to this year's Powergen Shield.
Despite being well regarded as a coach, Rayer was overlooked by the Arms Park management for promotion to the regional Cardiff Blues set-up as Geraint John's replacement.
John, Blues head coach Dai Young's right-hand man, has accepted a job to run the youth academy of Gloucester's Hartpury College.
The Blues decided to replace John by offering former Wales and Lions scrum-half Rob Howley his first job in coaching

Well in my opinion, we shouldn’t be saying who is a better DoR out of Colin and Rudi. They both have their own attributes that they brought to the club. They both signed some fantastic players who we have seen at Goldington Road, and some which we fortunately still have.
Colin had no easy task when he came to Goldington Road, and he did blooming well considering he didn’t have much money in the kitty to get the players that maybe we needed to be a little bit more successful and not have that last match of the season to see if we survived National League One.
We all knew Rudi would be a fantastic DoR and obviously we weren’t disappointed. Winning the powergen shield has obviously raised our profile and the kind of players that will be attracted to play for Bedford.
I think that Mike will be hopefully building on a team that has been put together by both Colin and Rudi so in answer nobody is better then the other, Mike is better off contacting both to be on the safe side.
And if people think that one is better then the other why don’t they trying being a director and see what they can do. So my moan is now over! Can u tell I’m under horrible exam stress!!

Rudi was able to attract quality players to the club because of his exceptional personality and because he is an internationally known rugby player and coach of some standing.
This season has been our best for 5 years and Mike Rayer has already stated that he will be in close contact with Rudi Straeuli.

Bedford, UK - Monday, May 16, 2005 at 22:29:35 (BST)
Robert, you forget other good Players Rudi has signed - James Brooks, Steve Booth, Werner Bester etc. My point is that Rudi has been able to attract players of this calibre (in part) due to the growth we've made since relegation 5 years ago. Do you really think these players would have signed when we dropped out of the Premiership? CJ had to work with what he could get at the time.
I don't see what is questionable about saying "Rudi has built on the strong foundations left by Mr. Jackson". If half a playing squad isn't a strong foundation, then Mungo Mansell was a scrum-half.
If this club is to carry on growing, Mike Rayer has to build on the foundations left by Rudi and CJ.
When does the rugby start again........

I rest my case and would not expect Mike Rayer to contact Mr Jackson.

Bedford, UK - Monday, May 16, 2005 at 21:01:06 (BST)
Robert C. - John Brooks, Arthur Brenton, Matt Volland, Ali Hepher and Mike Staten might all have some cause to argue with your remark regarding the first team players left from the Jackson era, as might Mattie Stewart, Ben Whetstone and Chris Rainbow had it not been for long term injuries. Sean Brady I seem to recall also joined Bedford during Jacko's final months, and Jon Phillips would have made more than one appearance in 2003/4 had his move not been put on hold due to a Saints injury crisis. Add to those, the likes of Dom Malone, James Hinkins and James Ball and you might realise what a rather crass and sweeping statement it was.

Robert C - you what?
To my recollection, half the squad from the PS final were signed by CJ (Staten, Hepher, Phillips, Brenton, Volland, Brooks, Ross, Stewart, Brady, Malone and Hinko). With the first 6 starting. I hope it's just how I interpreted your posting - surely you're not saying us winning the shield is only due to Mr. Straeuli???
I for one think CJ did a great job in what was a difficult period for the club. Maybe we didn't keep many players in the "off-seasons", but that is one of the many drawbacks of working at club with a limited budget. Short contracts mean players are understandably going to get worried and look for work elsewhere.
Bernie, how many of those players you mentioned are now playing at a higher level? Rudd and Horsman. Some also left to return home, not much you can do if a player is leaving the country.
Although I do agree with you (!) lets look to the future with Mike Rayer in charge for at least 3 years.

I must say that I can see no reason why Mike Rayer would contact Colin Jackson. Also the presumption that Rudi built on a strong foundation left by Mr Jackson is questionable to say the least. The players left from the Jackson era for the 2004/5 season and playing in the first fifteen were very few.
The players, coaching, playing style, fitness and ultimate success at Twickenham etc was the result of having an outstanding Director of Rugby in Rudi Straeuli.

I just felt that not enough was done by Colin Jackson to retain some playersmafter all he did sign them in the first place. Perhaps if we had been like Plymouth andretained the nucleus of a squad each year we would be pushing for promotion.Rudi has done exceptionally well in only one season as opposed to Colins 4.

Bernie : haven't bedford & lots of other teams seen it before when 'our' good players move on? Surely good players strive to play at the very top (if they don't then there is something wrong & questions should be raised). Therefore its very hard for managers/coaches/chairmen etc to keep players at the club!

Robin I've been thinking about your posting re Colin Jackson and his home record, I seem to remember that first season in charge we were nearly relegated, and didn't do much better after that, he even lst money to me when his fantasy predictions failed to pan out. He was unable to retain good players, e.g James Shanahan, Paul Bernard, Joe Ross (1st time around),Paul Bernard, Jon Summers, Mark Meenan, John Rudd,Cameron Thomas,Tim Otte,Matt Skillecorn, James Hinkins(but Colin realised the error of his ways), Chris Horsman, need I go on. Lets look to the future with Mike Rayer.

Robin, I think Colin is too out of touch with Bedford to be much use to Mike Rayer. I hope that the fact Mike has signed a 3 year contract means that this will involve Mr Irvine for at least the same period and hopefully longer.

Ref BOS and a quote from Mike Rayer:
"Everybody knows I like to play with the ball in hand, but you still have to stick it between the posts if you want to win".
This statement is very encouraging in that Mike Rayer will require a quality goal kicker as a priority now that Leigh has left the club.
Prior to James Pritchard and then Leigh Hinton coming to Bedford the Blues played without a specialist kicker for two seasons and paid the price in lost games.

I'd assumed that Robbie Kydd and Luke Myring would be the backup fly halves, though obviously that won't work if Kydd is going to be one of our starting centres as has been suggested elsewhere.

Just like to say a mega thanks to Rudi and all that he has done to put Bedford Blues back on the map and I wish him all the best for the future, in whatever he decides to do. Mike Rayer is a good choice to replace Rudi, if that is possible, and a former player and favourite at Goldington Road. I wish him well during the next 3 years.

Not a massive surprise about Rudi, reading the BoS last week it was obvious they were his closing comments on the squad and season. From his comments about Ben Whetstone I thought one of them would be leaving us this summer.
Thanks for all your hard work this last year Rudi - Good luck with whatever you choose to do now.
The 3 year appointment of Mike Rayer is great news, an adopted Bedfordian, great coaching credentials from Cardiff and more importantly a bit of stability for the squad.
Keeping with the reminiscing of the Allied Dunbar, remember the try saving tackle from Rayer against Newcastle??

I have to admit that being a mere whippersnapper of a lad (in possession of all my own teeth AND hirsutely blessed) I cannot compete with the likes of Mr McGee and others, in recounting tales of wet and windy trips to Aspatria and Fylde in the late 1800's. However, recent postings recalling Clem Boyd and victories over Quins have stirred a few memories but the 'official' web archives are sadly lacking in detail. There is nothing on the 98-99 season referred to in "Recollections of Rudi," and since then only a list of results, no objective summary of the season.
I wonder if during the close season it might be possible to improve upon this with help from the archives of the BOS/T&C/3 Counties, if such things exist, or ask Messrs Roy and Green to put into hypertext their professional recollections of seasons past.
Failing that, how about keeping HYS ticking over with fans' memories of our Allied Dunbar 1 adventures?
For my small contribution, my first Bedford game was the visit of Saints when they joined us in the then second division. Being a Cambridgeshire lad I freely admit to being a tourist fan at the time, eager to glimpse England 'legends' Rodber and Bayfield.

Clem Boyd - don't I remember a story about him singing "Danny Boy" in the dressing room prior to one of our vital end of season games [possibly the first Rotherham play-off game?] and inspiring the team to victory?
Whilst I'm doing this, how about the 0 - 37 [Mike R - have I got this one right] score at West Hartlepool to stay in Allied Dunbar 1 [I'm learning!] right at the end of one season - either them or us for the definate relegation slot in this season [must have been 1 up / 1 down and a play off back then]. It did nothing to make me enjoy rugby played at football grounds, and if I remember rightly started with Steve Vile [West's metronome kicker missing the first penalty from in front of the posts]. Definately a Scott Murray appearance that day, got a feeling Rudi was coaching as well.....
Anyone remember more?

The 2004/5 season has been the best for some 5 years. The first team playing squad always looked capable of winning matches and a seventh place in LD1 really does not reflect the true quality of the players. The highlights, of course, were winning the Powergen Shield at Twickenham and the home win against the LD1 champions Bristol. The Blues supporters are proud of the team and Rudolf Straeuli for a great season.
The atmosphere and enthusiasm at the club is approaching the 1999 era and hopefully this will continue to improve next season.

At the risk of stirring the pot now, it's quite noticeable what strong memories that season in 1999 invokes. So we finished 2nd bottom - but what an intense season it was.
We've had some enjoyable years in ND1 - but it has been far more relaxed. I don't know about you but I would like that intensity to return. Let's make next season a statement of intent.

Gervase: I think the ref in that match at the Stoop was Mr Hughes, not our friend Ed Morrison. I distinctly remember having to stop my friend Hilary from having a go at him after the match when he walked past us. It doesn't take much to get us "old biddies" riled! I believe it was the same Mr Hughes who was TJ at Sale when he was the only person in the ground to miss a blatant offence under his nose. Oh well, no surprise there as he wears specs off the field! Me criticise a ref? Never!

Mike R, totally agree re Clem Boyd. My eldest son (who would be about 9 at the time) asked Clem why he still had a Saracens kit bag seeing as how he was now a Blues man. Clem promised to give him the bag at the end of the last home game of the season, come what may.
Well the boy didn't forget, neither did the man. On being approached in scrum hall after the match by an expectant boy; Clem duly went to his father's car, emptied his dirty kit into the boot, and gave him the bag.
Clem was now elevated to hero status, on par with Junior, and is still remembered fondly in our house to this day. The kit bag is still the prized possession it always will be.
Not sure where you are these days Clem, suffice to say....."Good Man Yourself"

I found an archive had already been created on the Blues section of the BBC. 10 pics of the (beginning of) parade.
While I'm on it, the on-line reports from BBC 3CR have been very good this year and always uploaded by Monday morning.
Good idea about the working party. Does anyone remember the old club shop? That little room added onto the Scrum hall - is there any chance of changing that into anything more useful?
Ah yes, that game against Quins. As I remember Mick "the Munch" Skinner was there eating some pies and wrestling the Bedford bear. He was writing for Rugby World and his report was titled "Bedford stitch up the Sequins". Great days!

Volunteers Needed For Summer Ground Works!!
During the close season the Followers Association, in conjunction with the Club, will be co-ordinating a range of works around the ground to prepare it for the 2005 / 2006 season. These works will involve a wide range of jobs such as fence painting, weeding, tidying up the area at the end of the car park, etc.
The plan is to spend the remainder of May looking at what needs doing and drawing up a priority list with an idea of what sort of tools and numbers of people will be required for each job.
Would anyone willing to help in a work party please E-Mail Phil Novis at philnovis@aol.com and give him an idea of what sort of tasks you would be prepared to help with and whether you are able to bring along any tools. Phil will contact all those who register an interest as soon as there is a well enough defined list of jobs to start.

RE: THAT win against Quins,
Stephen Jones of the Sunday Times described it as 'one of the best and most exciting matches in the history of league rugby in England'.
It would have to be the most amazing finish to a match I've seen at Goldington Road. Blues fans walking out of the ground as we trailed by 12 points at the end of normal time. I'm forever grateful I wasn't one of them! We came close to turning them over at The Stoop as well, leading until the umpteenth minute of injury time, when Ed Morrison awarded a penalty to Quins which gave them an 11-10 win I think.
Same again next season (minus the penalty) would do pretty nicely!

Neil - Yes, I think Roy Winters was playing in the back row for us that day. Quins have turned him into a lock I see after the last few year: guess they must have "fattened" him up a bit from what I remember. So who else would have been playing that day? Junior - probably; Paul Turners last season? or was it Tony Yapp?; I suspect Mike Rayer at fullback; Scott Murray - undoubtedly; did Jeff Probyn play in the Premiership with us?; Rory Underwood on the wing?

Re PS Fianl video/dvd. (how I understood it.....) I think that the BBC won't allow any club to use the video, due to the BBC owning the rights & it being in the contract that the video can't be used commercially/to make a profit.
If this is the case, why don't we get the video for 'free' & make a 'donation' of say £10.

Good article as you say by Paul Ackford. I think Richard Hill will go a long way and has on reading this article put a lot in to get the club on the right footing for the future.
One thing I have tried to campaign for concerns the club with the Junior Blues. Its great we have curtain raisers or trailers, but I still reckon that if we saw the players up at training more often on a Sunday, handed out a few flyers to get the kids along, especially the younger ones, you will by default get the paying adults along. I know this works as this is how my wife and mother-in-law now come along as they were badgered by my middle kid. And I know that this is not an isolated incident.
I also think some sort of "incentive" whereby local schools, local clubs like Swifts could benefit from a ticket sale promotion might get more in and follow that up with perhaps getting teams like Swifts/Queens/Ath/Biggie/Olney along for a bit of a post match game forging links there as well. I know when we do our curtain raisers we try to involve local schools/local sides to try and promote the club.
Dont get me wrong, this year I think the marketing has been vastly improved and an average gate of 2k has to be applauded.

Am I right to remember a game a few seasons ago now where we were trialling by 13 points into injury time and scored 2 converted tries to win [something like] 34-33? I'm sure someone will put me right, and give me the team listing for the day - there's a challenge.
Interesting to see that Will Greenwood has pledged to stay with them, presumably he can only believe that his International career is over?

I thought the fly half wearing 20 was very impressive today, excellent kicking from hand, also the Paddy Ashdown look a like of was he Mark Sharps twin brother, looked good for a 40 something. Some excellent handling from both sides.Dodgy decision from the ref for the penalty try, nice to see Binns staying on the field and Upex was just magnificent, if somewhat slow, no change there then.Mark Howe looked no different from his playing days, but then if you go bald at the age of 16 you will never look any older. The whole game was played in the right spirit and finished ff the season well. On a more serious note I thought Chris Sheasby looked like he could do us a good turn next season.

Some pictures of today's parade at www.leggat.net/rugby/050508celebrations.
It was quite overwhelming seeing the crowd of supporters and well-wishers along the route, particularly in the High Street. At least one in the squad had wondered whether, given that the match was a few weeks ago, one might only see a handful of people. The turn-out quite confirms the feeling that Bedford is a true rugby town.
A mention of our esteemed Mayor is also appropriate. It was his Bedfordshire on Sunday that started the ball rolling and galvanised the town into action to save the club. It's ironic, really, that Gurney's antics six years ago for us, and more recently for Luton Town, spurred both into action to get shot of him and save their clubs - and look where both are now!
Rudi is - understandably - with his family, and therefore unable to be present. I hope that the pictures here give you a flavour of the event, and thanks for all you have done for the Blues.

Congratulations to Vass and Hinton for their awards today – and Ian, although it is tradition, you don’t have to move clubs now!!

With regards to Ben & Leigh, I don't think anyone should blame anyone at the club. Both are leaving to move up a step, Ben to a Premiership & Leigh off to Glasgow (European Rugby the draw I guess) then who are we to stand in their way. It's not as though it is a pure money decision, when maybe there could be an element of disappointment!
My guess is Rudi & the board will have somebody in mind to replace them! Looking forward to next season already!

Regarding the loss of Hinton and Lewitt, one ought to bear in mind that although both will be hard to replace neither were in Rudi's plans pre-season. We were fortunate to acquire their services amidst the uncertainty over Rotherham's future. Rather than pointing the finger at X, Y or Z for failing to keep them at Bedford, we should be grateful for their contribution this season and wish then well for next.
And, lest we forget, Ben is only going up the road to the Saints so we might yet get him back on loan!

Unfortunately players will always come and go and as a club on a limited budget we have no choice but to accept this. I agree that it is a shame that both Lewitt and Hinton(so far) have decided to go elsewhere to play their rugby but I wish them well and hope that they will always feel welcome back at GR.
Who knows what players next year will bring us, remember we have a wealth of talent both in the second team and in the younger players and I for one look forward to next season.
So good luck to all players, those staying with us and those leaving and may next season be everything you hope for.

Re "Geoff Irvine has failed to keep Leigh Hinton at the club". Can you explain why this may be construed as Geoff Irvines fault? Leigh is entitled to play where he chooses, contract permitting,we replaced Albert as kicker and that was in the days when we were slipping down the leagues and he still topped the points scoring charts. We will always have players coming and going, how many of the squad that finished the season playing for the Blues were here in August? Re Ian Vass, if we are able to turn his transfer into money and sign an equal for less then that is good business. I personally thought that the most thought provoking comment in BoS was Rudi's compararison of Twickenham with the U21s win against Leicester.Let's just put our faith in the board an coaching staff for next season. Any problems with that get yourself voted on te board and sort it out.

Geoff Irvine has failed to keep Leigh Hinton at the club but states "I am confident we will find an equally good kicker". This player scored a record 397 points for the Blues and Mr Irvine must know that the supporters wanted to keep Leigh at all costs! We await the new signing with anticipation?
Mr Irvine also states "Vass is still a Bedford player at the moment and he will remain so unless we get a good offer". Why would the club let our best player go when he is contracted to the Blues for two years? A signing on fee from Harlequins would disappear into the black hole of rugby finance and we would lose Ian Vass to another LD1 club.

Good to see the like of Upex and Binns featuring on Sunday, should make for a good physical game. My everlasting memory of Binnington was Boxing Day at Welsh, Binns had just returned from one of his enforced breaks, he was up against a skinny young lad called Colin Charvis, all afternoon the whistle followed by the words Blue 6 penalty echoed around ODP. As for Upex, if ever a man played for the pride of the shirt it was him, lasting memory of him was sharing a car with him and Ian Bullerwell on the return journey from Aspatria,as we left the car park Upes remarked that he hadn't had a very good day, Bullerwells reply is unprintable was ensurd a long silent journey home. As for Mark Howe, what can we say, the greatest uncapped player of his generation, and the only English hooker for years that can throw straight.Bruce Mackay returns with a full head of hair, unlike his old class mate Howie.Albert, nuff said, still wearing his original shirt, Albert of course set the trend for professional rugby when he was sponsored by Sketchly.Jimmy Chandler, one of the hardest tacklers in the game, I remember him tackling a Moseley player during an away game and the guy was still out on the touchline 20 minutes later, he's probably still recovering today. Shame there is no Skingsley,Deano, Smoothy Allen (sent off at Rotherham for being the only player not involved in a 29 man fight, not enough opposition for him), Forrester, Humberstone or 'arris and others to many to mention.I thought Bayfield might have made a cameo performance for both sides(filming commitments allowing). Should be a great day featuring some of the real Legends of Bedford rugby. In my senility am I correct in thinking that Phil Pask once played for Bedford? For those of you who haven't seen these players, don't miss it. These are the players whose idea of an ice bath was having a pint of chilled lager tipped over your head. These guys were the backbone of Bedford for many years, the foundation on which proefesional rugby was built.

Thanks for the fantastic performances this season Ben. Good luck. From the BBC website:
Northampton have signed 25-year-old Bedford flanker Ben Lewitt.
Lewitt has previously played for Leicester and Orrell and also represented England at sevens and student levels.
"Ben has performed brilliantly this year for Bedford and we're very pleased he's decided to join us," said Northampton head coach Budge Pountney.
"He'll make an immediate impact in the way he can carry the ball and with his defensive capabilities."

From todays Evening Standard
The rush for the exit door at relegated Harlequins appears to have started, with England Sevens wing Ugo Moyne and Samoan wing George Harder set to join Bath along with outside-half Andy Dunne.
Dunne was expected to leave but he will now be joined by two of Quins' most dynamic attacking players. Prop Jon Dawson has already signed for Wasps, forward Roy Winters could be joining Bristol and hooker Ace Tiatia is being linked with London Irish.
Quins are due to hold a key board meeting today to decide how to handle a £3million hole in their finances following relegation from the Zurich Premiership.

One thing particularly occurred to me watching the Quins/Sale match-ironic or cruel depends on your point of view. When Mark Cueto, who surely most people would agree was one of the (not very many) England success stories in the six nations and looked a cert for the Lions tour, scored what turned out to be the winning try one of the Quins players left floundering in his wake was-Will Greenwood, who somewhat surprisingly was chosen for the Lions tour and I guess was fortunate in that respect since had it been someone other than Sir Clive choosing he might not have made the trip.

I have to agree Robin, I think Quins will have to wait and see who will stay and who will go before getting too confident. It is easy for the likes of greenwood to say they will play next season, but that may all change when the finances are reviewed.
If they keep a large nucleus of this seasons squad then they surely will be too good, but anything else and I predict a bit of a struggle, especially given the strength and improvement of the top 5/6 clubs in Div 1.
Guess we'll just have to wait and see!!

Kirsty
I think it depends on who they can keep. For example, Will Greenwood saying he will stay, good for him, but that would be a HUGE dent in their salary pool which by their own admission will be reduced. And if Greenwood wants to play for England, it would be interesting to see what Robinson thinks about him playing Div 1 rugby.
They will be "the team to beat" as with any team that comes from Zippy, but they need to keep some of the nucleus of the squad. And with Mark Evans finishing tomorrow, the squad not be what the new coach wants (and I find it interesting it is Evans talking to the squad about who he wants to stay, and not the "new" coach)
As you say, there will be no easy rides and every club from Doncaster and Newbury upwards will see this as "the" game.
Good luck to them though, as you say, no easy rides.

I agree with Titch the chick. Ok yesterdays game was not the best we have seen the Blues play but surely they are allowed the odd off day. You cant blame Rudi either for playing some second team players. If he doesnt see them play how is he meant to know if they are any good to play in other first team matches. If you think about it there is more pressure on the second team members to live up to the expectations of the supporters and play as well as the first team.
I myself am just looking forward to the end of season ball with all those players in their tux's and the start of a great new season.

Yesterday was a day of broken Records. Well done to Leigh for surpassing Pritches previous points total. Also to Cov for putting more points past the blues than any other team this term.
Unfortunately a third record must go to those eating in the Butts Retreat Pub across the road - despite pre-booking, advising we were bringing 3 coaches of supporters some of us waited more than 80 minutes for pie and chips. Under extreme pressure the landlord/chef scarperred leaving his 2 bar staff to deal with a hungry revolt. Apologies to those who didn't get their food (Big John and I really enjoyed the stew and mash!) and the extra drinking time that was incurred! Ok so we didn't win and it wasn't the best of games we've ever played but there's been worse, much worse remember Wakefield a few seasons ago? Yes, there were some of guys playing from the seconds and yes, maybe at times they were out played. But what's the point in having an academy with good players if they don't get a chance to play in first teams games?? The seconds which were playing have all played for the firsts before and have shown what they are made off. One thing I don't understand though is how come a couple of weeks ago everyone was saying how good Geoff played and last week everyone was saying about that great try Karl scored and then this week the guys are getting slated?? Rudi obviously has faith in the playing abilities of all the guys who played yesterday other wise they wouldn’t of been picked.

CoventrySeason ends with a record points pounding.
Coventry 47-29 Bedford
With eight changes being made to the impressive Blues side which beat champions Bristol, there was always a chance that Coventry would make hay against an under strength Blues side.
By the final whistle Bedford had conceded more points than they had in any other game this term, and at one stage it looked as if it could have been a lot worse.
With only 15 minutes of the second half gone, they were trailing 47-15 and looking very sorry for themselves.
Coventry led 26-15 at the break and finished with a haul of seven tries and six conversions.
But the Blues also put plenty of points on the board, tacking four tries, three conversions and a penalty.
Those kicks and one of the tries gave Leigh Hinton 14 points, allowing him to set a new club record of 397 for the season - a new club record.
From Times&Citizen
UK - Sunday, May 01, 2005 at 12:19:49 (BST)
BBC report:
Rudi Straeuli's gamble of playing anything but his best 15 away to Coventry came seriously unstuck as every Bedford supporter feared it would.
For whatever reasons he made eight changes from the side that beat the champions Bristol last week. The scoreline looks like one of those end of season wrongs but the fact is that it was 47-15 just 15 minutes after half time when it was 26-15.
It ended up as the highest score that Bedford conceded all season. Coventry finished with seven tries and six conversions. The Blues had four tries, three conversions and a penalty with Leigh Hinton collecting 14 points and finishing with 397 points for the season - a new club record.
His first penalty and then his try and conversion actually gave Bedford the lead, but by trying to over elaborate with the ball in hand and then missing a series of tackles, the times were there when the floodgates could open - and they did.

The Bedford squad yesterday included 9 or 10 fringe players and unfortunately the result was predictable. This was a game of men against boys and I felt sorry for the first team players who were in the squad. The back row was not good and you only had to compare the wingers of Hinkins and Griffiths with Fifiti and Johnson to understand the mismatch in this game.
Key players like Ian Vass and Leigh Hinton played well and the chairman and directors need to do everything possible to retain them for next season or quality players will need to be recruited.
This was not a fitting end to the season as many of the supporters were of the opinion that a Blues team should have been selected to try to secure a better LD1 position.

To answer Dave Burton's question about the Followers Man Of the Match award today, no one person actually won it although Ian Vass was very impressive.
We did something a bit different and gave Rudi a bottle of champagne for his work this year and also gave the rest of the team 14 or 15 bottles of champagne as a thanks for all their efforts over the entire season.
Can I take this opportunity to thank all those who donated the champagne this season, especially those from today. The players do really appreciate it. We will organise a similar scheme for next year.

That result (the one at the bottom of the premiership) will not be a good one for a quiet summer. Bristol will have their work cut out to replace Quins. If Leeds had come down, and by God they deserved to stay up, it would have been simpler. Wuss too would have had to bite the bullet but Quins have some weight behind them and I feel it might not a straightforward 'thanks for the memories'. It's a shame but hey, money does talk and Evans has a point when he says that rugby is business these days.
The end of a season then and what a season it has been - I will always remember those two weekends in April. My thanks must go to the supporters who make any ground such a special one to be part of. This season's spoils belong to you. Let's look forward to next September, be there and make sure you bring a friend.

Shame the season had to end with a really awful performance today, especially after the effort on the pitch the last few weeks.
In general we made a mistake Coventry scored. Tackiling, which has been fantastic, was non existant, knock ons all over the place, turn overs in abundance. Only good point was the sun was out an excellent stadium which will only get better. Coventry are certainly building for the future groung wise.

It was painful in the sun at Coventry today. Certain members of the squad need some serious tackling practice. It’s a shame the season had to end like this – we made a good Cov side look like world-beaters today.
Who got Followers MoM today? Vass?
Congratulations to Leigh for beating Skippy’s record – fancy another go next year????

Looks like I made the right choice to stay at home and do some work and watch the enthralling Premiership dog fight. Well done Sale in securing third spot and well done Wuss and Saints on staying up. A win for Leeds as well was great news.
Look forward to Quins next season and hope that they dont lose too man players. But as they said on Sky, Evans selling Sanderson, one of the Premierships top players, they questioned his thinking.
Sale werent brilliant but I think the Tuesday night game killed Quins. They were out on their feet at the end. Diprose was walking for the last 5 minutes. Greenwood was awful but the missed kicks from Staunton did it for Quins on the day. But 6 wins just wasnt enough. Teams have improved but Quins not enough.
Anyway, when does pre-season training start?

Robert C - first time I've ever been accused of misquoting someone when I've copied and pasted their comments! Anyway, if you want to be irate about Hannah's comments, fair enough. I think she was being reasonable, and there's no way the tone of her post was derogatory to the club.

Come on you Blues! Isn't Hannah married to Shanners? Where is Shanners? Great if they're both supporting the Blues now! Blues need hard cash to sustain momentum;, 'sporting chaps' all very well, but let's have some practical, as well as emotional, support from Bedford. There is plenty of talent and money around. As DS says, 'let's be 'aving you!' But now, how are they doing? Fight back, you lads!

Robert C: "I guess the best thing is to disregard it as it is an insult to the club and the supporters."
That's a bit OTT, isn't it? I don't think Hannah was having a pop at all - she was saying can't supporters hang around at the host club for a drink after the game!
I like it when visiting fans hang around at our club after the game and mingle, and it's a good thing when we do too.

It's seems bizare that clubs are allowed in the Premiership even though they don't have their own ground. Look at how many teams don't have their own - especially the London clubs! If Bristol Shoguns' games clash with Rovers' then they will play at ANOTHER ground (Ashton Gate). Surely one of the criteria of getting promoted should be the club have their own ground rather than just sharing with the town's/city's football club. I wonder what would happen if the football club went bust or nearly so, so that assets such as the ground/stadium are sold (e.g. Leeds/Notts County/Wrexham/Derby County all nearly/have sold their grounds/stadium).
Surely Prem clubs who don't own a ground/stadium should be made to start planning for such venues or be forced into paying a 'tax' so that lower league clubs could benefit from ground improvements. Therefore investing in the game as a whole!

Good news ... and hopefully with no further twists ... from the BBC site
Bristol Shoguns have been officially promoted to the Zurich Premiership.
Their chief executive, John Portch, was advised of the decision by English Rugby on Friday.
The Memorial Stadium - which the Shoguns share with Bristol Rovers - was inspected last weekend to ensure its suitability to host top-flight rugby.
The Shoguns plan to play their home matches on Sundays, and if their fixtures ever clash with Rovers, they can switch to the Ashton Gate stadium.
Howard Thomas, chief executive of Premier Rugby, said: "On behalf of Premier Rugby, I congratulate Bristol on their promotion.
"The club was previously an important member of the Premiership and we welcome them back."

ENGLISH DUO JOIN GLASGOW
22-Apr-05
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Leigh Hinton, this season’s leading scorer in the English national first division, has signed to switch from Bedford to Glasgow. Mike Roberts, from London Wasps, also is moving north.
Roberts is a tall, strong wing – 6ft 3in and 16st 5lb. The 22-year-old was a member of England’s sevens squad in the past season.
“Mike Roberts is a powerful wing who has been part of Wasps’ first-team squad. We’re sure he will enhance our back three, especially with the departure of Sean Lamont,” Hugh Campbell, Glasgow’s head coach, commented today.
Hinton, a 26-year-old stand-off and full back, kicked the winning penalty goal in Bedford’s 14-13 victory in the Powergen Shield final against Plymouth Albion at Twickenham on Saturday. His season’s tally now stands at 352 points.
Before joining Bedford in 2002 Hinton was with Moseley and Worcester. While at Moseley he played for the English National Divisions XV against the 2001 Australian touring team.
“Leigh Hinton has been exceptional in the English first division as top-scorer in that league. He will be a valuable addition to our squad,” the coach remarked.
Roberts has signed for two years and Hinton for one. They join five new signings previously announced – Craig Hamilton from Newcastle Falcons, Tim Barker from Ulster, Colin Shaw and Steve Swindall from Glasgow Hawks, and Ben Prescott from Aberdeen GSFP.

I do hope this is a load of bollards

The first story about Leigh Hinton appeared on the BBC website saying that Glasgow had signed Hinton and Mike Roberts from Wasps, then a couple of days ago I noticed a new story on the BBC site saying that Mike Roberts had joined Glasgow but any reference to Hinton had disappeared! Maybe there is hope!
Good luck tomorrow lads lets finish the season in style.

Ok we havent yet beaten Coventry and brought the curtain down on an absolutely enthrawling, exciting, and thoroughly entertaining season that i for one have thoroughly enjoyed, but as we are about to enter the close season time to think about ground maintenance.
This year like last i am sure there will be plenty of volunteers, what would be nice is a coordinated approach to the work. We need to identify early on what needs doing and perhaps assign work parties to these jobs with agreed dates and times so that materials etc can be arranged in advance and effort maximised(who can forget the bollards). The whole piece would need to be overseen by an overall coordinator with the time to do this and perhaps also with the name Phil Noviss- The whole itinary (wheres spellcheck when u need it)could be published on the web so advise what was happening/ when and what tool/protective gear required.
The guys have done the biz on the pitch, our turn to do the same off it-- get it looking good for when Mr Hinton and Mr Lewitt et all return next year (i mean who seriously would want to leave an immaculate GR to play in Glasgow or anywhere else for that matter)

Please dont think me grumpy, its Friday before a long weekend and I am over the moon! However, can I just put in a plea for Bedford fans to perhaps stay after the match at Coventry, have a few pints with their supporters at their new ground and maintain are excellent record of being a decent band of away supporters. Too often recently we are encouraged to get back to our clubhouse for a party. I know there have been excellent reasons of late and that the money goes to our club, but please, Bedford Rugby has a great tradition of being great away supporters - please dont loose that!
Surely one pint afterwards wont delay the festival at the club house?

Looks like the Fat Lady might have a sore throat.....
From the Times and Citizen site:
'Hinton not on his way yet.
Glasgow rumours quashed by Straeuli.
Bedford director of rugby Rudi Straeuli has played down reports that Leigh Hinton will be leaving Goldington Road at the end of the season, writes Mike Simmonds.
It was suggested last week that Hinton, who needs just four points against Coventry tomorrow to enter the Blues' record books, was on his way to Scottish Celtic League side Glasgow.
But Straeuli insisted that no such deal had been struck, and told the Times & Citizen: "Sometimes agents can spin these stories and make up things that are not true.
"Leigh has not signed a contract with Glasgow and I do not think that he really wants to leave because he likes the club and is enjoying his rugby.
"As a club we prefer not to speculate about rumours until a statement has been made.
"Once the season is over then we will announce our plans for the new campaign."
Straeuli also backed Hinton to get the points he needs to topple James Pritchard as the Blues' leading scorer in a season.
He added: "Leigh has done really well this year and I think he will again take his opportunities."
A win with a bonus point could lift Blues up to fourth place but defeat would see them finish in seventh.'
Here's to victories for the Blues AND the Sale Sharks :)

Every year, the same arguement! The RFU and the Premiership Clubs are constantly entering into this embarrassing situation of relegation and promotion - they're the idiots of the sports world. Southampton Football Club have invested heavily in a new stadium at St Mary's and now face a very tight relegation battle over the next three games - no arguements, they lose they go down - why can't rugby just get their house in order, accept that relegation makes for a competitive sport, after all this is real excitement, who will the Blues be playing next season? PS Well done to Paul Alston and Luton RFC for their promotion!

Please don't get muddled up at Cov' Blues! Let's end the season with a hat-trick of commanding performances. I think that Quins will go down, but knowing thier luck the RFU will find some way of saving them! To me it should not matter who should be bottom. Whoever finishes bottom should go down and whoever finishes top of NLD1 will be promoted. Final story.
The RFU can't stop Bristol going up, they have everything that is needed for the criteria.
Clubs seems to be making a big deal of being relegated, its not the end of the world, they get money and lots of it at that, and its not as if the rugby is poor, I mean The Blues and Bristol showed how good quality rugby is in National League Division One.

And a big thank you to Autoglass for thier 3 yr deal..if we keep playing like that the gates will improve, more sponsors, more cash, and then promotion, although next Saturday is goning to be a nail biter for some one. My personnal opinion, once again, is that if it is Leeds or Wuster down then Andrew will try to get it ring fenced. Any one else, Harleyqueens or Saints then money talks......
poor old Budge PPoutney who does he pick as his kicker next week for Saints vs Wuster as Shane Drahm is off to wuster......
Must whoop Cov with bonus point, and hope Bris beat Otley so we finish fifth.
However if Exeter won by some 450 points and Bristol lost then Exeter up, about as likely as National Division 1 decent referees ( or even at Twickers !)

Very impressive performance from the young Blues this afternoon. I have to confess it's the first time I've watched them.

Another great game on Saturday and the squad gets better. If Leigh goes and good luck to him, another will come along. Good up and coming players want to come to Bedford, they are like buses. We thought the same when Pritchard went. Mark Harris looks as good attacking, as he does defending and if you watch him practicing his kicking he looks accurate.
My nomination for player of the year is John Phillips. Reliable, aggressive, a player's player and in the main an unsung hero.
He works hard, has great skills, encourages others and is always there.

Steve, we'll certainly be needing a new place kicker, but if it is in fact a rumour, I'm not sure whether it's best to comment at this juncture. I've learned from a source outside the club that at this stage everyone is searching each others' sites, ready to offer more money to players that might be leaving, and who could fit into their scheme of things. Having said that, I'm as impatient as you to know who is in our squad next year, but it is possible that speculation may result in our losing out! Best leave it until white smoke emerges from the club portacabins!

Superb stuff yesterday - another step up on the victories over Plymouth. Makes you wonder how we managed to draw with Orrell though !It's been a great season to be a Blues (and Wales) supporter - wouldn't it be good to round it off by stuffing Coventry next week ?

Well what a time to be a BLues supporter??? Last Saturday was fantasic and so was yesterday. So the battle of the champions.. Okay Bristol we won the title and congratulations to them but we won the match yesterday so... WE are the champions!!
On the leigh note, he spoke to a friend of mine,at the bonus try night and he actually hasnt signed anything yet, so don't believe everything you read, although I was guilty of doing just that until I was told that..
Good Luck to the seconds today, I'll be there cheering you on.. let that be a warning! ;-)

Phew!! What a week of Rugby.
After last weeks magnificent victory it would have been so easy to consider it job done and have gone into the Bristol game with less than 100% commitment, so today's victory is even more commendable.
I thought to go in at half time with the scores tied at 13 all against a very quick and inventive Bristol backline was a supreme effort, but I felt that the amount of ground we had to cover and the number of tackles we had to make was going to take it's toll in the second half. But boy, what an awesome second half performance it was - better than last weeks even!
Sad to see Leigh go, but best of luck for next season. Heard a rumour that two of the other candidates for Player of the Season have already signed for next season and that an exciting young South African forward is on his way to GR.
Today's victory and the two recent wins over Plymouth have shown what this squad is capable of; if we can keep 90% of them, add a couple more quality players and bring on the likes of James Ball, Sacha Harding and Kieron Hallett, then "the future's bright, the future's BLUE"

Great win today although it'll be great to cap off the season with a win away at Cov next weekend. Perhaps the most interesting statistic for me this year is that our only defeats away from home have come against the four 'West' teams of Bristol, Exeter, Plymouth and Penzance, all very difficult venues to play at and against teams who were on top form at that time in the season when we played them. What an improvement it would be on previous seasons away records to have won all the remaining away league fixtures. We all know it's possible so lets get as many of us upto Cov next weekend for the game. Fourth place is in sight with us, Cov, Penzance and Otley all in contention. Come on you Blues!

A very fair report on Bristol's website here
Well done to both teams today. Anyone who came to see today (or last week for that matter will want to be back). A great advert for the game, and the division.

That must have been the best performance this season. There's so much to be positive about - the handling, the attacking from deep, and the tackling (particulary from Ian Vass - I don't think I've ever seen a player make as many tackles as that in a game).
Fantastic Bedford - the smile will take a long time to come off my face.

What can one say about Bedford Blues after a storming victory against Bristol Shoguns, League 1 Champions. Level at the break 13 - 13, Bristol scored an early try through Cox. Hinton reduced the deficit before tries from Dickson and Strauss gave Bedford a 13 point advantage, which they never lost, to win in style 33 - 20. What a week as a gate of 3284 roared Bedford home in one of the games of the season. A season ticket for next season is definitely on my wish list. Megamungusfantastical!

Bedford Blues thrashed Bristol to-day and played some of the best rugby we have seen at Goldington Road for many years. We have a brilliant Director of Rugby in Rudolf Straeuli and the best Bedford playing squad since our premiership days.
The supporters will expect the chairman and directors to do everything possible to keep both Rudi and the squad intact for next season.

Great to see so many Bristol fans abd have abit of banter with them but for the sore loser who made the remark about losing to Northampton seconds what you gonna do when you face better teams than their firsts.

Excellent again - I, for one, do not want the season to end just at the moment: must be some of the best rugby being played currently by the Blues than we have seen for many a season.
Thanks to the whole team.
Was really impressed with Karl Dickson when he came on today - and must say "thanks" to Leigh for his performances and points this season - hope it works for you at Glasgow.

A mega thanks to all who made the Bonus Try Party such an incredible success. What a night and a half and the added bonus appearance of Bedford Blues and their Director of Rugby, Rudi Strauli, as Matt Allen and Rudi reflected on that incredible day at Twickenham last weekend. Cuisine and refreshments incredible as was the music supplied by Electric Avenue. A night to remember by all present and hopefully a game to remember against Bristol Shoguns today.
