February 2016

The 2016 Six Nations is now well underway after the opening weekend and looks set to be one of the tightest competitions for years, so where better to take in the international fixtures than on the screens at Goldington Road.

Next Saturday 13th February as the Blues take on Jersey in the Championship, the Club will screen both France v Ireland and post-game Wales v Scotland in all the bars including the big screen in the marquee.

All good things come to those who wait, and Bedford Blues were the shining example of this on Sunday afternoon as they pinched an 18-20 victory over Nottingham with the final kick of the game. You can now watch the highlights by clicking HERE.

Despite an early penalty from Myles Dorrian and a brace of tries from Paul Tupai, Bedford headed into the final minute of the game trailing the Green and Whites 18-13. Joel Conlon made a super break along the right wing before timing his perfectly to the supporting Sam Blanchet who dodged the final tackle to score under the posts giving Jake Sharp the simplest of conversions to win it.

Bedford Blues take to the road on Sunday afternoon as they head to Lady Bay to face Nottingham in the Greene King IPA Championship.

The Blues head into the game off the back of a 64-20 victory over London Welsh, but know that Nottingham - who picked up a bonus point win over Moseley last weekend - will be a tough nut to crack as they look to close the gap on the top four teams.

When Nottingham visited Goldington Road earlier in the season, the Blues had to put in an impressive defensive display to secure a 28-19 victory with tries coming from Pat Tapley, Sam Blanchet and Jordan Burns.

The Club would like to thank the Friends of the Blues for their latest donation of £20,000 as organiser Howard Travis presented a cheque to Club Chairman Geoff Irvine at half-time in last Saturday's match against London Welsh.

The amount represents a continuation of funds raised and paid to the club over the last four years by the FoB Trust to support Bedford Blues.

Irvine said: "We are delighted to receive another substantial contribution from The Friends of the Blues and I would like to say a big thank you to everyone has, and who continues to, contribute to the wellbeing of the Blues through this supporters trust.”

Bedford Academy found the RFU funded Wasps Academy too strong for them, conceding two tries in the first half, and two in an improved second half, to lose by 24pts – 0 under lights at Goldington Road.

The game started at a fast pace with both sides wanting to play open rugby.  Bedford’s discipline continued to let them down, and with two consecutive penalties costing them 60m, and giving Wasps a good attacking position, Wasps scored their first try when a driving lineout sucked in the Blues defence allowing Wasps to score on the blind side.

The Blues Academy are at home on Wednesday night under lights at Goldington Road, when they welcome the Wasps Academy, Kick Off is at 7.45 pm.

The Blues make eight changes (two of them positional) to the starting lineup that lost to East Midlands U20s last week.  In the pack, Charley Robinson moves to prop, with Michael Bond at hooker, Henry Peck is at prop and Charley Harvey at 2nd row.  In the back line Olly Howard returns at scrum half, and captains the side; Paul Aguele moves to inside centre with Jack Gibbs at 13 and Tom Fawssett on the wing.

Tickets for the British & Irish Cup Quarter Final will go on sale on Tuesday morning after it was confirmed that Bedford Blues will meet Jersey on Friday 11th March.

Following a meeting between the competition Organising Committee on Monday 1st February, the draw for the British & Irish Cup knock-out stages was made along with confirmation of the semi-final and final.

While the Blues, who topped Pool 2 of the competition, face Jersey on Friday 11th March with a 7.45pm kick-off, the other fixtures will see Leinster ‘A’ facing London Welsh, Yorkshire Carnegie hosting Moseley and Cornish Pirates being drawn at home against Doncaster Knights.
