December 2015

There was to be no repeat of the Blues opening day victory at Ashton Gate as they were comprehensively beaten Bristol in the third round of the British & Irish Cup on Friday night.

There was little for Bedford to take from the game with the exception of 12th minute Myles Dorrian penalty and a 79th minute Justin Blanchet try as Bristol controlled proceedings.

The hosts had secured the winning bonus point by half time before adding four more tries after the break to compound Bedford to their third defeat in a row.

Stuck for ideas for Christmas? Don't know what to get that one relative who has everything? Well fear not as the Bedford Blues are on hand to help you out at this very festive time of year.

On Wednesday 16th December, the Blues will be revving up the yellow Robin Reliant, donning their favourite sheepskin coat and heading into Bedford Town Centre to set up shop in the bustling market close to Marks and Spencers.

The Blues have been enjoying the cup competition so far this season having racked up good wins over Scarlets Select and Ulster A, but know that they are in for a huge challenge against Bristol who currently top the Greene King IPA Championship.

Bedford Blues unbeaten home run came to an end on Saturday afternoon as second placed Doncaster Knights recorded a 13-18 victory at Goldington Road.

Things had looked bright for the Blues in the opening 40 minutes as Joel Conlon crossed the whitewash with Jake Sharp adding the extras along with two penalties, but a first half penalty from Knights winger Dougie Flockhart was followed by five more in the second half to secure the win.

Bedford Blues will be hoping to bounce back immediately against Doncaster Knights in the Greene King IPA Championship this weekend having suffered an agonising one point defeat to the Cornish Pirates.

Looking ahead to the game, Blues Director of Rugby Mike Rayer said: “We know we have a huge challenge ahead as Doncaster are in a rich vein of form. They will bring a big physical threat up front and have some real X-factor in the back three.

“We took a knock last week, but we are back at Goldington Road and in front of our fans and we’ll be doing all we can to get back on the horse and put in a big performance.”

Bedford Blues full back James Pritchard is joining near-neighbours Ampthill on a short term loan deal to help them during an injury crisis.

Pritchard, who recently appeared in his fourth Rugby World Cup with Canada, joins up with several former Blues as Ampthill prepare to face Hull Ionians this weekend.

Speaking about the move, Blues Director of Rugby Mike Rayer said: “Pritch is an amazingly experienced player who will be able to help out Ampthill on the pitch as they battle with a nasty injury crisis.
