September 2013

We have two new Academy players arriving in Bedford in October.   They are 18 year old twin brothers Dylan van Dieman and Keano van Dieman who have just left school.  The brothers have New Zealand passports and have been playing in Perth, Western Australia since they emigrated there with their family some years ago.  They have both played for Western Australia U18s and the Western Force Academy, and are moving to the UK to further their rugby careers and join Bedford Academy.

They have worked in a number of part-time jobs in Australia whilst they were at school including electrician’s labourer, packing and shelf stocking, industrial cleaning and bar work.

The Bedford Blues Academy are seeking new players who have the ability to play for the Blues Academy.

If you are a player (between U17 and U19) who thinks you have the potential to play at the Blues Academy, or you are a coach who would like to recommend a player, please send the following info to the Blues Academy Director Denis Ormesher at denis@ormesher.co.uk

Last remaining places for Mike Rayer’s Testimonial dinner on Friday 11th October. Testimonial Committee member Ben Whetstone said:  “We couldn’t have arranged for a more spectacular speaker on the night in the form of Wales, Barbarians and British Lions Legend Phil Bennett.

Throw in the appearance of a Male Voice Choir, a Charity Raffle for Mike’s chosen charity Keech Hospice Care, and an Auction of some unique items, this is an event in Bedford not to be missed.”

The Blues Academy face a tough home game on Wednesday against an older Cambridge U21 XV.  The game is at Goldington Road, kick off 7.30 pm.  Admission is free, the bar is open, and all are welcome.

Cambridge, who were relegated from National One to National Two (South) at the end of last season, have recruited well over the summer and started their National Two South campaign with a good win away at Redruth on Saturday.

Bedford Blues have announced that Blues Academy player Chris Lord has been signed for the Blues senior squad for the 2013/14 season after training with the Blues 1st XV during the summer.  Lord impressed in the Blues training game against Bournemouth scoring three tries, and appeared against Northampton Saints and Saracens in the Blues pre-season friendlies.

19 year old Lord, a winger/full back, joined the Blues Academy a year ago.  A pupil at St.Joseph’s School Ipswich before joining the Blues he played wing for the England U18s Clubs & Schools XV.

The Bedford Blues squad descended on The Embankment on Friday night for the official launch of the brand new home and away jerseys which will be used during the forthcoming Greene King IPA Championship season.

With just a week until the campaign kicks off against London Welsh at Allianz Park, the Blues squad and coaches were joined at The Embankment by all of the Goldington Road staff and plenty of local well wishers for the launch of the new kit which has once again been supplied by Zoo Sports.

Bedford put in a solid performance against Saracens in their last pre-season friendly, but were unable to deal with the Premiership team’s quality as the hosts triumphed 71-12.
